Trump team has fined immigrants who didn’t self-deport $6 billion — and now it’s coming to collect

The process is permitted under a law passed by Congress in 1996 as part of a wider immigration package. But over the last three decades, threats of fees — which can now reach up to $998 a day — have rarely been enforced. Officers instead focused on removal, rather than adding another layer of punishment.
But that changed under Trump, largely because the process for sending out threatening fines with potentially financially disastrous results is much easier, according to the American Immigration Council, an immigration policy research group.

This should go further toward reducing our deficit.

You can't get blood out of a turnip.BTW , illegals can't trust our government , to self report. They more likely put them into a detention prison in another country.

Many illegals are self deporting. Those who refuse to leave and not doing so out of their lack of trust in the government, but because they are surrounded by liberal enablers.

The fines amount to cruel and unusual punishment to me, you know the same argument Trump's lawyers got the courts to agree on his massive fine. Of course, most cannot pay and certainly not millions. It is deceptive to imply you can come back to the USA legally as the article suggests. Most will not make that cut because law forbids it or they will not have enough income once they leave the country. The biggest problem though I have as a Christian is that the USA and others treat poor and rich foreigners differently. I am not sure if that is true for deportations, but at least the rich will have representation and the ability to file for legal status if they have not been here too long. Though I might be more liberal than most, I would just prefer a Reagan type of amnesty for those with a job and the ability to pay the fees to process a green card. It is less disruptive to families and is good economics.

Then when the illegal aliens go to court to pay their fines, we can catch them and deport them! What a clever idea! I can't wait to see how many billions of dollars the government will reap from these fines.

The bill back in 1996 authorizing a fine of $998 maximum per day. Now that Trump is president it suddenly is cruel and unusual punishment? Cruel and unusual punishment was meted out to the J6 defendants, where was you voice then? The harsh reality is that no matter what Democrats say, if you don't self-deport you will NEVER be allowed back in this country. This is not the time for talk about amnesty, the Biden administration flat out lied to the American people and allowed between ten and twenty million people to enter our country in a quest to establish the Democratic Party as the forever controlling power in our nation, all the while lying to the American people saying the border was safe, secure, and closed. It will take decades to fully recover from the terrorists and criminals and drugs and human trafficking that they allowed. Once that is done Democrats can be encouraged to join others in bringing in good hard working future citizens to enter our country rather than those they can exploit for work and for votes. It is true that special treatment for those who invest has been promoted in our country for some time, the Democrats in my state have done this for big business. A number of countries have offered residency or citizen benefits to those who invest in their countries.

You can't claim cruel and unusual iuntil it has been applied. But just as Trump's fines were over the top on his charges, (now overturned) the near 1000 a day fines are also over the top. I like mercy in the court system and even in immigration offenses. I am not familiar enough with the U.S. capital offenses to know if they received cruel punishment. If I remember right, at least one court lowered the penalty for some involved. Trump too saw to their pardons, some that were violent maybe even got off too easy?
If there are major fines to immigrants I suppose that some will appeal and see if it is cruel or not. At 1000 a day even if you had a million it would be wiped out in three years. So it is impractical because most can't pay the fines, and taking all income and wealth from immigrants does seem cruel. It is not necessarily unjust to remove them, but to take homes etc that they have built up is.

It is not just Joe Biden that allowed illegals in the USA. It was conservative and liberals alike that favor globalization. I would argue that the USA lack of enforcement is really an off the books policy by at least several administrations. This attitude from those in charge, GOP and Dem. seems to want a sort of common market like the EU has with free labor mobility between nations but they can't do it politically so they were allowing it under the table. For the GOP, many wanted cheap foreign labor, for the dems, they wanted new voters, the worse of the groups want instability so that the US will be divided and more apt to be primed for world government. So they took the political path that was open and opted to not protect the USA border. This is in part why I am sympathetic to working illegals. In a sense I can see them as victims of a much bigger game.

Those that self deport from a 6 month overstay will have to wait 3 years to apply for a visa. Those that have been here over a year will have to wait ten years. Of course you have to have 125% of the poverty line to be eligible, plus a reason such, as a family member.

I think it is good Christian policy to support illegals that have U.S. citizen spouses. To give them mercy in staying in the USA. Breaking up families or forcing US citizens to move to poor nations with their kids is not my idea of the love of God. In some cases there are illegal kids that were brought here with their parents and have no clue about their home country. I think that Jesus would let them stay. The earth is the Lord's and all it contains. Man steals, conquers and divides it. I am not saying take everyone, but a Reagan like amnesty will still likely occur once Trump is gone. I personally don't get it. The USA has plenty of room, and plenty of jobs right now. Deport the criminals and let the families stay. Why is that not a loving policy? What is the hatred about foreigners or if not hatred, the application of the law much like a Pharisee, that suggests every little immigration point must be followed. Trump makes exceptions to laws all the time. Currently the federal government allows pot to be sold in states in direct violation of Federal law and no one does a thing, except maybe slowly try to change the law. I am not saying you or anyone in particular is wrong but think about it a bit more. What are your motivations to deport working illegals especially those with families?

I myself recently overstayed my visa in a foreign country, because a storm shut the immigration center down. It was too busy for me to wait 3 hours as there were too many people once it finally did reopen. So I came a few days later and was fined an extra 20 dollars and got all my papers in order. I am glad the authorities are decent like that in most nations. It is too bad that right now the USA is not one of those countries. So you know I like Trump for some things, and yes he should close the borders and create some respect for US immigration policy. But the ICE demeanor that he created is not one of mutual cooperation or respect. It is designed to project power and fear and while that is fine for those who are violent, it is detrimental to loving people who just want to have a chance to have work for themselves and stay with their families.
Anyway, I thought it might be good to air out my thoughts on this. I doubt it changes anyone mind but at least understand where some like myself are coming from. To an extent, it is interesting that my ideas for immigration in the USA is similar to those of Mormons. They are not gung ho on restrictions, in part because quite a few of their new converts are US illegals, also that they were pushed from lands for being different. They suggest it is the love of God to feed and attend to even illegals needs.

Good helpful comments for the end of the Trump's first term. But the situation has drastically changed. First, Democrats had a poor record on immigration, many potential immigrants were persecuted in Southeast Asia, some had fought with Americans, and Democrats insisted communist governments, in SE Asia and elsewhere were not persecuting them at all. Many potential immigrants died because of the liberals and establishment Republicans that went along with this. During the last four years Democrats were outspoken about wanting immigrants to pick the crops, etc. But what became obvious was that some Democrat leaders were anxious to bring in as many as possible in order to win future elections, no matter how many drugs, rapes, murders, and human trafficking occurred. Despite the big money and major media propaganda, a number of liberals realized that they had been lied to about the border being safe, secure, and closed, as well as other matters, and that was the biggest factor in Trump's victory. Good for them for speaking up. Leaders in power realized they might lose the election,, and raided the home of the leading political candidate for president and persecuted him in court in order to try and prevent him from winning. They even created a fake photo of documents in order to trick the American people. Despite their power and money and influence, Trump won. But now we are overwhelmed with 20 million people, many of whom are not those who love the ideals upon which our country was founded A number are violent criminals and terrorists. The two million or so who have so far self-deported will be given a chance, those who have contempt for our laws do not belong here.

Thanks for your kind response. I would only add that I think the criminals are the least likely to self deport. They have little to lose except maybe a stay in detention.

The typical illegal has a chance to return but that chance is only on paper. For most the practical chance of immigrating back legally is next to zero. First, the law says they must wait at least three years. Even if they were kids brought here illegally, this minimum three year wait applies. If they were here a year or more than it goes to ten years. Those who are illegal a second time and caught are forever banned. The problem that most immigrants have is that they have to show money or income. Well the income levels in Mexico and the other poor places are not going to cut it and since they do not have jobs in the USA, the only ones with a chance are those who get sponsors. Most will need family members also to have a chance. I know foreigners that have family members that can not even get a visa to visit America. One whose sister is an engineer in Chicago, making great money has been denied two times already. She is no criminal has traveled to the EU and back before, but the USA is untouchable to her. I think the bar to legal immigration seems higher than the past. Some nations have a wait time of even two years to get an interview.

Since there is no path to immigrate for an illegal inside the USA, I think it is unfair to say that democrats brought them here to vote. Very few get registered and even fewer vote. i am not saying illegal voting is nil, but it is negligible from the good research i have read. https://www.cato.org/blog/shedding-light-incidence-illegal-noncitizen-voting. Most want to lay low and trying to sign up to vote or actually go to the polls is sticking their neck out even with Biden. I still prefer the theme that many of the leaders allowed a weak border and lack of enforcement so that America would be more global ready or to exploit the cheap labor.

i agree Trump did get persecuted. Sadly, he too is a perpetrator. His role in trying to influence Georgia election officials or even ask Pence not to certify the election was in poor judgment. Recent evidence too is the whitewashing of the Epstein files, the raid on Bolton's home, the crazy notion of sending anyone to Uganda, and the attempt to fire or deport someone before a trial or a defense can be presented. Sad, but that is how politics is working these days.

I hear alot about illegals, that some indeed to take public money in the form of government assistance than they pay in taxes. Some do commit crimes, some do not have American values. But likewise there are some who do pay more taxes than they take out, some do perform well at their jobs, and some do adopt American culture, even if it hard to define. The fix is not to throw everyone out, but perhaps to segregate the illegals and try to accommodate the more productive ones.
