"If you burn a flag, you get one year in jail," President Donald Trump said as he signed executive orders in the Oval Office on Monday.

We’ll see about that.

Destruction of a flag, bro.

That’s the topic of this thread. That’s all I’m talking about.

None of this has anything to do with any point I’ve made. If you still need help figuring things out, I’m right here.
I am not your bro - never have been - never will be

Don't get mad because you got yourself into an untenable place.

In addition - you once again completely ignored my question about the flag

Where do you draw the line.

Then whose rights are most concerned about - the protestor or men and woman in the armed services and those that died defending that flag, who view it as a sacred symbol. Do we ignore their rights?

Those are my questions - I look forward to your answers/

Some people view destruction of the American flag as a sign of contempt for the United States.
Yeah, that’s the point. When people protest something, it’s usually because they aren’t very happy with the thing they are protesting against. There’s also times where destroying a flag with fire is the proper way to dispose of it, so it’s not automatically a sign of contempt. In either case, so long as the flag being burned doesn’t belong to anyone else and there’s no risk of a greater conflagration resulting from it, the destruction of someone’s personal property, even if it is an American flag, should not be outlawed.
It’s sort of related to how some people view the confederate flag as un-American.
I don’t see the relevance?

Yes. This law can be ridiculous because of how worn out flags are properly disposed of. Very, very true.

I only meant a flag is more than just a piece of plastic or fabric. It’s symbolic for our country.

That’s a shame. Do you see me as your enemy in some way? I thought we were all bros here on CF.

Ugh! That’s not good for the environment! BUT BUT BUT I’m very much pro freedom of expression, even if I don’t like it.
Yeah the expression part of flag burning should stay legal, if it can be done without actual harm.

Personally I would not protest that way. Not so much out of personal flag reverence, but out of respect for people who gave up a lot for what the flag is supposed to represent. It a symbol for that ideal, and wont ruin that in their faces.

By the same token I dont like seeing the flag burdened with other pet causes or interests, like putting guns on it or symbols of this group or that.

Can we compromise and burn all the confederate flags?

Well? I don’t like the confederate flag, but I’ve heard that some people from the south view it as a southern pride flag.

Have no idea how accurate that is.

I’m from the Midwest and seen it around here.

Don’t like it one bit.

Furthermore, the Confederacy no longer exists. There is no need to produce any more confederate flags. Keep them in the past where they belong!

My opinion only

Yes, but there is a right to freedom of speech. Just like how some people may react negatively due to flag desecration. I dunno.

Sure, they have the right to say "I don't like that" if they see a flag burnt. They can even use poopoo words.

Does that go for both sides?
Certainly, we're complaining about restrictions on free speech, due process, the separation of powers, federal usurpation of local law enforcement, gerrymandering, equal protection and an administration operating in an ethical vacuum. Not our feelings. Trump voters told us what we could do with those in his first term.

We already incarcerate more people than most civilized countries. Can't we just do a hefty fine rather than taxpayers paying to keep them in the Graybar Hotel for a year? Why has our answer to everything become, "lock them up?"

Joe Biden said make it illegal.

Hillary hoped for a law
They were both wrong then but in either case, they were introducing a bill to Congress so the American people can decide on the matter. Neither of them were calling for an executive order from the president to override the first amendment.

Why do you think these proposals never made it to a law?
