Edward 'Big Balls' Coristine Attacked in DC: What We Know

*caution - the picture of his injuries is bloody.

A former employee at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) nicknamed "Big Balls" was assaulted in Washington D.C. at the weekend, police said.
Edward Coristine was attacked in the city's Logan Circle neighborhood by a group of teenagers attempting to carjack him and a woman at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, according to The Associated Press and Politico. The woman was identified by police as Coristine's significant other.
Two 15-year-olds were arrested as they attempted to flee the scene.
Marko Elez, another DOGE staffer, wrote on X that Coristine was "a hero." He added: "I took this photo after Edward protected a young woman from an attempted carjacking by 8 thugs near Dupont Circle. Violence like this in the heart of DC is completely unacceptable."

Elon Musk, the former head of DOGE, wrote on X on Tuesday: "A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in DC. A DOGE team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her."

One on eight -

America sure is going to the dogs.
No - this is why Trump moved the National Guard into the DC area to help law enforcement.

Congrats to this brave young man.

It’s simply yet another sign of the authoritarian decline of America. And now there is no one for Trump to blame any more because this is his folly and his alone.

Handmaiden Tale here we come.

Aren't there already several threads on this? Even the news source is from a couple weeks ago.

Also, lols on "trying to stop carjacking" as though he were some kind of hero rather than just a mugging victim.

Correct. This one incident is why Trump has militarized Washington DC. Because Big Balls got beat up. Washington DC, which has had falling crime rates for awhile now, was trumpeted by Trump et al as something Trump has done himself. The odd thing is Governors like the one from Ohio, are sending the national guard to DC, when that state has three cities in the top 10 come crime statistics.

ah, no...

He is the last in a list - example -
this is from 2023

  1. Amanda Peper, a scheduler for Senator Katie Britt (R-AL), was robbed at gunpoint in October 2023 while walking to her building about a mile from the Capitol

  2. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked by three armed attackers in the Navy Yard neighborhood, less than two miles from the Capitol. He was not harmed

  3. A staffer for Rep. Brad Finstad (R-MN) was attacked at gunpoint near his home in D.C. after returning from the congressional baseball game. The staffer sustained minor injuries

  4. A staff member for Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was brutally attacked with a knife in broad daylight in March 2023. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries, and a suspect was arrested

  5. Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in the elevator of her D.C. apartment building in February 2023. She was punched and grabbed by the attacker, who was later arrested and pleaded guilty

  6. In a congressional hearing, Chairman Bryan Steil mentioned that two staff members were mugged at gunpoint near Capitol Hill in 2023, sharing their experiences to highlight the growing threat of violent crime
Here is from 2024:

DC crime is out of control.
Anyone who lives in DC or visits DC has seen the impact weak crime policies have on public safety.
In recent years, the DC City Council has taken a variety of steps that have weakened the city’s crime laws requiring Congress to step in.
In 2020, the DC Council cut $15 million from the Metropolitan Police Department budget. Simultaneously, the Council repeatedly passed temporary emergency policies that restricted police officers’ authority and changed the DC criminal code.
For the first time in 30 years, Congress had to act and nullify a DC law because it was so ridiculous.
Crime in DC is so bad that President Biden was shamed into reversing his veto threat.

Months later the House and Senate had to act again.
We passed another resolution to overturn the antipolice polices implemented by the DC Council.
Unfortunately, President Biden vetoed this bill.
In 2025:
The former DOGE employee and
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old Capitol Hill intern, was tragically killed in a violent incident. His death was cited in official White House crime statistics as an example of how crime affects government workers

This isn't a one time thing by any means - it just isn't being ignored anymore. And to correct the propaganda line - The President is NOT militarizing the city, he brought in National Guard member to Assist a Police force that is 700 officers short of what they need.

U.S. Attorney Ed Martin Jr. Credits President Trump’s First 100 Days with 25% Drop in D.C. Violent Crime

"Thanks to the leadership of President Trump and the efforts of our 'Make D.C. Safe Again' initiative, the District has seen a significant decline in violent crime," said U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr.

It has gone down further since Martin's April pronouncement. I mean which is it?

Big balls taking a beat down is exactly why this charade which is now killing 30% of restaurants reservations is in effect.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia is marking President Donald J. Trump's first 100 days by highlighting a 25 percent drop year-to-date in violent crime across the District, credited in part to the "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative and the U.S. Attorney’s partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Metropolitan Police Department.

Yes, it has dropped down 35% since 2023 when Trump wasn't in office. So they are just taking credit for something already occurring BEFORE they were in office. So one more time. This is all about Big Balls taking a beat down and Trump seizing a city with the military and other Govs sending the guard to DC, even though cities in those Gov's own states have worse crime than DC itself.

This would be slightly more believable if the military were patrolling the bad areas rather than just the photogenic touristy spots.

No, this is a show of authoritarianism, of wrenching control away from the people and concentrating it into his own hands.

Prove it - I showed you three years of Government employees being attacked - the Congress having a hearing on the issue and words from your own link.

You have alleged this twice now - time to prove it.

National Guard expands patrols to DC Metro stations amid crime crackdown

WASHINGTON - National Guard troops are now patrolling several Metro stations across the District as part of an expanded federal crime crackdown.

many arrests are happening in Wards 7 and 8 - tell me - are they high crime area's?

They are also in tourist area and Capitol complexes - because that is who is being targets.
What control are they taking away?
What control are they taking into their own hands?

They are arresting criminals - how is that bad.

Enough with opinions - show proof.

Crime is down 35%. Crime is NOT down to zero, which means crime happens. And LOL, a congressional hearing by the GOP.

You're ignoring the crime rate in red states.

The fact is, one can call out crime in any city...and spin it for political purposes...or in this case, justify putting the US Military into our streets.

It's UNAMERCAN.

Threads about this story are an AMAZING example about comparing anecdotal evidence and statistical evidence.

List a set of individual incidents with names....from a city of 700,000.

you can argue the "wrong people" are getting mugged in dc all you want.

But you can't say the whole city is so unsafe because his buddy got hurt.

If you're sending in thr army you better define what lack of safety means and better be willing to actually make DANGEROUS places safer.

Becsuse there are far more dangerous places than DC.

Also, strange that he continues to get support after the right Smolletted him up REAL good.

I don't know if you can trust the statistical data. It seems there's been an effort to cook the books

Because this thread is not about red states now - is it?

The thread is exploiting a single crime in Washington D.C. As tragic as the event was, it's an every day reality in cities across our country...no matter their red or blue status.

uh huh.....

Constitutional authority is now un-American?

The writers of our Consitution, having seen the abuses of an English king, were quite wary of establishing a standing army that could be used by future leaders against the citizens. Their caution was warranted as today, we see a president deploying the National Guard without any justification.

Is this the America you want? Museums, subways and street corners maned by soldiers wearing combat fatigues?

It’s really just America being the dreadfully dangerous place it’s always been. With it’s problems of guns, drugs and mental health problems it has been able to do nothing about.

Some things just are.
