Dr. Fèdèric Martel has a PhD in social science, and master’s degrees in law, political science, philosophy, social science. He is a visiting professor at Harvard and since 2025, is a professor at the University of Zurich. He spent four years traveling to more than thirty countries interviewing 1,500 priests, bishops and cardinals. The result of this extensive research is the NY Times Bestseller, In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy.

Dr. Martel is homosexual who researches and writes about same-sex cultures in the modern world. He became interested in the Vatican and its culture of homophobia. He said: “I am like St. Thomas: I need to check to believe. So I had to spend a long time investigating. . .” (Martel, viii ). His research revealed: “The Vatican has one of the biggest gay communities in the world” (Martel xi).

A Homophobic System

During his interactions with Catholic clergy, Dr. Martel felt he’d,

“gone back in time and found [himself] in the 1930’s or 1950’s” when homosexual men existed in the Closet by hiding behind false fronts, living double lives. Martel didn’t spend four years chasing after soundbites; he’s wasn’t interested in rehashing scandals. His mission was clear: “Unlike those Vaticanologists, who denounce individual ‘excesses’ but in such a way as to conceal the ‘system,’ I am less concerned with exposing those affairs. . . [than] “need to expose a system built from the holy of holies -the cardinals’ college - both on the homosexual double life and on the most dizzying homophobia” (Martel, xi, xii).
The Vatican is a culture soaked in homoeroticism. Priests who didn’t recognize themselves as gay before living in Vatican City, “discovered their homosexuality. . . when they started working at the Vatican” (Martel, 10).

As far as homosexuality, sometimes you just have to tell yourself "no" to certain behaviors. It's the same with drug addicts, etc. Nobody expects it to be easy, but to follow Christ you have to pick up your cross and bear your sufferings. I'm a widow, I could be dating like crazy. My life sure would be a lot less lonely. But, in following Christ, I realized that I had to focus on Him, not myself. After clearing the addicts out of my life, I've made a few friends who's focus isn't on getting high all the time. Anyway, homosexual behavior, like any other sin, is not a life sentence. And I definitely have splinters in my eye too.

Well said! Unfortunately, they do anything to justify their sin. As I sadly have to live with this situation. :(

We talked about this several weeks ago, but why are there so many gay clergy in Catholicism compared to clergy from other denominations?

Does it have to do with them not being able to marry?

No. Homosexuals can marry now. I think it has to do more with culture a family expectations. Latino families expect marriage and grandchildren. If that does not happen, they are encouraged to the priesthood. I believe most are devout in the beginning and basically see it as the best option. Either way, homosexual or not, celibacy is expected. And many do practice it faithfully. But I expect if they find other men such as themselves, temptation abounds. Last I read it is the Episcopal Church that has a higher rate of homosexual clergy than the RCC. But they are not held to the same standards expected from the RCC as far as discipline.

Back in the past being a priest was the perfect cover and escape from familial and societal expectations. I’m sure it still is. But that does not make these men any less sincere if they felt a genuine calling to the priesthood. Again, homosexual or not, they are all called to celibacy.

And remember, marriage is not an insurance policy against sexual desire and preferences.

Does it have to do with them not being able to marry?

From AI Overview:

Comparing the two, while the Episcopal Church openly ordains and supports LGBTQ+ clergy, including gay and lesbian individuals, the Catholic Church, while having a substantial number of gay priests, still operates under a system that often requires them to be closeted.
Therefore, it's more accurate to say that there are a higher number of openly gay Episcopal priests than openly gay Catholic priests, reflecting the different stances and policies of the two denominations on LGBTQ+ issues.

Will the RCC EVER loosen up on the celibacy rule and / or ordain openly gay priests and / or allow priests to marry? It seems to me that this is the only way to solve the problem of closeted homosexual clergy in the Church.

That article didn’t make me feel any better.
It’s a three parter. Not sure why you think the RCC is the only one that has this issue. And if they are following their vows, why should it matter?

But are they following their vows? I was under the impression that they aren’t. Then there’s the abuse scandals.

I know all faiths have gays in their ranks but I was also under them impression that it’s worse among the Catholic clergy.

The Church was infiltrated by communists. Bella Dodd, former communist, admitted this to Venerable Fulton Sheen.

Ever heard of the Metropolitan Community Church? It was actually founded by a gay man that originally only had gay members. The first straight member was the founder’s mother.

I think they’re liturgical and celebrate Communion weekly.

I know one of their ministers became a Catholic priest later on.
