The opening salvo of diplomatic talks that the former administration failed to accomplish for three years - Trump accomplished, (the meeting), in seven months. It's a start - one that Joe Biden could not and did not do.

This is what political theatre and a photo op looks like.

Actual diplomatic negotiations don't occur between leaders in grand rooms in front of the press. They occur between teams of experienced negotiators with obscure job titles, detailed notes and strict instructions. They happen out of the limelight, in small government offices and the conference rooms of slightly dingy hotels. They happen on phones and through emails. They're made by proposal and counter-proposal, inching through a checklist of matters grand and mundane, over long, boring hours and days. They're sweated on, piece-by-piece and line-by-line until everyone is, if not happy, then at least equally unhappy.

I speak as someone who's been on the outside looking in at the process.

Fran Lebowitz commented back in 2016 or 2017 that “Donald Trump is a stupid man's idea of a smart person, a poor man's idea of a rich man, and a weak man's idea of a strong man.” This is a non-diplomat's idea of what diplomacy looks like.

My impression is the European leaders dropped everything (summer vacations) and came rushing to Washington to persuade an American President to not side with a Russian leader bent on aggression.
