Missouri workers who started accruing paid sick leave on May 1 will lose it Aug. 28 under legislation signed Thursday by Gov. Mike Kehoe.

The new benefit, linked to an increase in the minimum wage passed with 58% of the vote in November, became a target for business lobbying interests. Republican allies in the General Assembly pushed it to Kehoe’s desk by invoking a rarely used state Senate rule to shut down debate over Democratic objections.

It’s terrible how the Democrats have stopped caring about the plight of the working man.

I lived in the St. Louis suburbs for most of the 1990's and at that time it was a swing state that honored the results of referendum instead of letting governors and legislators override them as they emulate a totalitarian dictatorship.

Of all the states I've ever lived in, Missouri was my favorite. The St. Louis suburbs had everything my hometown of metro NY had--for half the price, half the traffic, half the aggravation. The city was 25 miles away--further than we'd been to midtown Manhattan--but we could get there in 35 minutes or so. People were warm and friendly, and my parish was so involved in ministries that helped others. It breaks my heart to see the government break their contract with the citizens. Bummer.

Did you mean to say Democrat? Isn’t this a Republican effort to stop sick pay?

The problem with paid sick leave is too many exploit the system. Employees even go around boasting about how they used paid sick leave to attend a concert or whatever.
Most places I’ve worked have combined sick/personal time and don’t care if you’re sick or not.

I’ve never worked at a place that had a separate sick leave allotment. It would really be nice to have it though since many of those companies allow it for medical/dental appointments so you don’t have to cut into regular PTO.

My current place has a separate allotment for sick time (I think because there is a state-level mandate for it), as well as a couple other different buckets. As far as HR is concerned, only "PTO" rolls over and is paid out on separation. "Sick", "Wellness" and whatever else is in there do not. Beyond that, most departments treat them identically, though I have heard of one or two that require "PTO" to be scheduled leave and "sick" to be unscheduled.

We had two buckets for it when I started where I am, but they combined it and gave us an extra 40-80 hours depending on circumstances. People like me who need special considerations have a different program we pull from so we don’t ever have unpaid leave for our medical needs.

I was civil service and sick time (five days at the start of each year, plus one day for each month worked and a certain number of unused hours carried over to the next year) was separate from personal days (something like 3, no carryover, use it or lose it which were separate from paid vacation (one week the first year, then two weeks then two weeks plus 1 day for every year over 15 maybe). Upon retirement, unused vacation was paid in full, while unused sick leave was paid out in half, capped at a certain number of hours. This was per union contract - the police and corrections unions had the most generous contracts.

It is possible to address this issue without entirely discontinuing the policy. At my current company, we have separate sick leave for medical reasons, planned medical appointments, and PTO. If an employee calls in sick for fewer than three days, the absence is deducted from PTO, unless a doctor's note is provided. For absences exceeding three days due to illness or medical recovery, a doctor's note is required.

Employees who wish to utilize sick leave must provide a doctor's note. If an employee prefers to attend a concert and calls in sick without a doctor's note, the absence will be deducted from their PTO. While this policy may not be entirely foolproof, it is effective for the majority of employees, as approximately 95% would not be able to obtain a doctor's note without a valid medical reason.

That's a good policy. I should have said one of the problems. I don't approve of sick time being cut altogether.
