Trump goes after mail-in voting and election machines; "States are merely an “agent” for the Federal Government", must do what President says

I remember the days when the Republicans screamed from the rooftops for a "smaller federal government"! Where are they now?
Im so confused.

I hope President Trump implements these before voting begins in 2026.

Based on projections for the US economy next year, Democratic Party may secure a majority of at least 60 seats in the House of Representatives. If election irregularities are addressed by that time, there would be fewer challenges to the DNC assuming control of Congress.

I support President Trump in addressing voting issues to ensure a secure 2026 election that Americans can trust.

That type of conservatism is no longer present. Few of us from that time remain, and we do not have any political party.

Curious. What " type" of GOP it is now?

To be honest, both political parties have shifted and changed their political ideologies, particularly since President Trump entered politics in 2015.

Some of the policy change on either side is because of President Trump’s own ideology.

For the majority of the past 50 years, Democrats and liberals generally opposed free trade and globalization. However, today many support these policies. Even Senator Bernie Sanders has expressed criticism of President Trump's tariff measures. Historically, Democrats supported a smaller US military and limited global involvement, but today their foreign policy is more assertive, resembling that of W. Bush or Reagan.

The GOP has shifted its policies significantly. Previously advocates of globalization and free trade, they now support tariffs. Once dedicated to small government and free markets, the party today thinks it’s acceptable for the government to collect 15% revenue from companies like Nvidia. A previous GOP leader spoke in Germany and asked the Russian leader to "tear down this wall." Currently, a GOP leader has suggested that, for the sake of peace, some land might be given to Russia.

He says go back to the original more failsafe system and do what other democracies have already done.
What have other democracies "already done"? Dozens of countries still have mail-in voting in some form, despite what Trump said in his post.
Oh my the totalitarian horror of it all.
The authoritarian part is the part where he decrees that states have to do what the President says with regards to vote tabulation. That's directly counter to the Constitution, which explicitly grants states the right to decide how they conduct their elections. While there is provision for federal oversight, that is granted to Congress, not the President.

It's populist, which is a bit ironic given populism normally represents the common citizens against a self-serving elitist ruling class. In this case, MAGA has done a really good job of convincing the voters that both parties were that corrupt self-serving class, and only a very rich narcissist can save them.

America could very much use a conservative party again. You have some left in the GOP (Nikki Haley for example) but many more are leaving every election (Tom Tillis, GOP Senator from NC).

This is also known as "postal voting". It should surprise no one that what Donald said about it, e.g. "We are the only country in the world that uses mail-in voting", is not quite accurate: Postal voting - Wikipedia

Now, all of a sudden, democrats are opposed to safe and secure elections with a fail safe paper votes. Talk about always going to the 20% of an 80-20 issue. Why? Because Trump, that's why. Democrats do not like this because this is exactly why we had President Bush instead of President Gore. Why? Because there was actual paper ballots that had to be physically counted by actual people.

I'm sure some states will take Trump's suggestions under serious consideration.

However, the president has no authority to tell the states how to run their elections. Any executive order attempting to do so would be blatantly unconstitutional. My state is guaranteed to ignore Trump and continue with mail-in voting.

Nonsense. I have consistently supported machines that produce human readable paper receipts.

The few places where no receipt is available are largely in 'red' states: Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, Indiana.

(Actually, clicking to the 2026 map, it looks like it's just Oklahoma, Louisiana and a couple counties in Texas.)

So.....the GOP is....heading towards......what exactly?

The contemporary Republican Party is encountering significant obstacles to its continued viability. Many of its longstanding guiding principles from the past five decades have been set aside, and there appears to be reluctance to reassess current policies or address the evolving needs of citizens through strategic adaptation.

President Trump’s influence in American politics has been considerable since 2015, as demonstrated by victories in two out of three presidential elections. Nonetheless, the enduring prospects of the MAGA movement remain uncertain. The GOP’s post-election analysis conducted in 2013, following Governor Romney’s defeat, provided valuable insights for the party’s advancement. Recommendations from this review advocated for maintaining core conservative values while responding proactively to changes within 21st-century society.

It is evident that some members of the Republican Party aim to capitalize on President Trump’s political achievements without undertaking substantial reflection on the party’s foundational challenges. While President Trump delivered notable electoral successes in 2016 and 2024, with a competitive campaign in 2020, the party has faced setbacks in other races where he was not the nominee, including consistent losses since the 2014 midterm elections and a relatively unremarkable performance in the 2022 midterms.

At present, the GOP enjoys strong support from a single predominant demographic, whereas groups such as African Americans, Hispanics, immigrants, younger voters, and those with higher education levels largely favor the Democratic Party. Demographic projections indicate that the group most supportive of the GOP will gradually decrease over time. Despite these trends, the party has shown limited interest in engaging with broader demographic perspectives and intends to persist with policies that contributed to their successes in the 2016 and 2024 presidential contests.

According to trump states must obey his orders on voting, I wonder whether we will see him deploy the national guard to ensure it?

Well, at the very least I'd expect him to try to cut off some kinds of federal funding to states that don't comply, but deploying the national guard would be fun too. We need to get this stuff moving now so we can have the fur flying during the elections next year.

Well obviously to ensure legitimate voting tanks and armed soldiers must be stationed outside polling booths in cities.

Obviously there will be ice roadblocks at polling booths in areas with large ethnic populations.
