The question is how best to manage them.
Get them off the street so they will nolonger become a threat to themselves or others, and put them in a secure facility where they can receive food, shelter, medical treatment, and addiction treatment before they are psychologically evaluated. After they are chemically clean and their phycological state is sound, they can then be released with strict probationary instructions. Kinda like what is happening now.

What would Jesus do ?
Well, lets look at what Jesus did. He healed them of their sickness and sent them on their way.

Which is what many of us are proposing in our own way, like getting them treatments for their illnesses. And more. Like helping them get jobs.

Right, so the way to solve the problem must be to treat them all the same and evict them. But nobody has noticed the dark humor in the President's order to "evict the homeless."
Funny how we heard nothing from the left when San Fransisco evicted hundreds of homeless from their camps right before a Chinese dictator came to visit. How quaint.

The Bible doesn't say. They just went elsewhere. Usually joyfully and sharing the good news after they had repented.

This is why it is so important to get the homeless to repent & believe in Jesus in order for him to help them.

Yes. But I would prefer that they did that after they were removed from the general public and nolonger became a threat to themselves or others. Mothers do not appreciate their children playing in parks filled with homeless camps and dirty syringes littering the playground. Just saying.

Living in the UK I wouldn't know, surely it's not as bad as this ??

I once saw a syringe in the Toys R Us parking lot.

You weren't listening, I guess. I was actually in the Bay Area during that time and heard quite a bit.

Do you suppose the ones who have jobs will be able to get them back?

Since when is condemning people for their "self-control insufficiency" not a commentary on their moral sufficiency?

They're separate because a person's perception of an action itself (in terms of whether or not it's moral or immoral) is separate from the way they're engaging in it.

For instance, I don't have any moral objection drinking or gambling. I've partaken in both activities.

However, if a person was drinking a fifth of whiskey per day, or spending 75% of their income at the Casino, that would be a self-control/addiction problem for which they would likely need some professional help.

Which of those two categories do homeless people who have jobs fall into?
I was referring to the majority cohort (>80%) that is dealing with either mental health issues or substance issues (or both)

If we're talking about the small percentage of people who are working full-time, but have to live in their car (or live with a family member or friends) because they can't cover rent

Depends on the particular set of circumstances...

For some, it could purely be a cash inflow issue (although, I'm not sure how many that would actually apply to, in places like California, people in that situation are entitled benefits to help offset that)

For others, some substance and mental health issues could still apply. I mentioned my cousin earlier... they're in their 30's and they work, and they're sheltered (in the form of still living with my aunt and uncle -- but when my aunt and uncle pass, who knows what'll happen), but they still faced things like having their car repo'd, due to the fact that for people who are in the grips of a substance issue, if they've got $600, and their choice is use it to make the car payment, or buy more of the substance, they'll choose the latter -- and the same would be true if the choice was "drugs or rent"
