I’m not sure it’s up to them.

I mean, legally and politically speaking it is but I have no reason to doubt Trump will make a run at a third term. How well that will play out for him, I’m not sure but the intention is there and it’s up to his team of lawyers to figure out what legal loophole is going to best achieve that outcome. We’ve seen this already with his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Why the GOP (and the rest of) Congress leave me with no confidence is that they haven’t stood up to one thing he’s done. They’ve pretty much all fallen in line at this point. Their political futures depend on telling the maga base what they want to hear and until there’s a break in that toxic culture, I have no reason to not expect the worst.

I think the issue is more about Trump making 2028 claims and less about him selling merch. People on the right can't seem to decide if they want this or if he's obviously just joking.

May be such actions are often cited as evidence of authoritarian tendencies in President Trump.

I think you are right.

But why make jokes about him running, especially in front of a country like Azerbaijan, which has a history of dictatorship and challenges to the rule of law? As the President of the United States and a representative of the Constitution, is it reasonable to expect that he should uphold the Constitution rather than undermine it, even in humor?

Whatcha trying to say here? I grant you that anything Trump does is 'cited as evidence' against him, whether or not it is actual evidence against him. You have a narrative to maintain that Trump is an authoritarian and the data, such as it is, needs to be forced into that narrative.
