“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this:
‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’” (Revelation 3:14-22 NASB1995)
I believe that this is a fair description of probably the majority of the church here in the USA, which is where I live, and what I am familiar with. And my assessment is based on 75 years of life, 68 years as a believer in Christ, and over 50 years of Christian ministry, and much participation in multiple church gatherings of four different church denominations in 10 different cities in 5 different states in the USA, and then listening to many preachers, and reading many religious posts on the internet, and reading what others write and what they share as what they believe is the gospel of Christ, etc.
From the west to the east, from the north to the south, the most popular and the most widely received “gospel” message today is a man-created watered down altered gospel message which ignores and skips over the bulk of the teachings in the New Testament on what it means to believe in Jesus and to be a follower of Christ and to have salvation from sin and the promise of eternal life with God. The majority appear to accept a very simplified “gospel” which reduces faith in Jesus Christ to a mere profession of faith in Jesus Christ but minus dying to sin and walks of obedience to our Lord.
I see and hear this almost daily from many different sources where they are teaching that all you have to do is say you believe in Jesus and now all your sins are forgiven and heaven is guaranteed you when you die, but regardless of how you live. And many are teaching against repentance, or they have diluted it to a mere confession of being a sinner, and they are teaching that we don’t have to obey God’s commandments, for they call that legalism or “works salvation” or “lordship salvation.” But Jesus taught to come to him we must deny self, die daily to sin, and walk in obedience to his commands.

So, those who have embraced the cheapened man-created “gospel” of salvation are convinced that they are on their way to heaven based on their professions of faith in Jesus, nothing else required. And so they are lukewarm because they don’t feel any obligation that how they live matters for eternity. So many of them have, thus, become very worldly to where it is barely distinguishable between the church and the world anymore. For most have become unequally yoked together with the ungodly via turning the church into businesses incorporated (merged) with the state (the world).
This is basically a call of God to the lukewarm church to repent of their sins of adultery and idolatry, to die with Christ to sin, and to walk with him in obedience to his commands in holy living from now to eternity. It is a promise of reproof and discipline to bring them to the place of true repentance. It is a call of God to let God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – back into the gatherings of the church, with Jesus Christ as head and the one leading them in what they ought to do. And it is for them to depart from their unholy unions with the ungodly, so God will receive them.

My sheep hear me. They know me.
They listen to my voice and obey.
I call them and lead them.
They know my voice, so they follow me.
They will never follow strangers.
They will run away from them.
The voice of a stranger they know not;
They do not follow him.
So, I tell you the truth that
I am the gate, so you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever enters
Not by the gate; other way,
He is the thief and a robber.
Listen not, the sheep to him.
Oh, I am the Good Shepherd,
Who laid his own life down for the sheep.
I know them. They know me.
They will live with me eternally.
The thief only comes to steal and
Kill and to destroy the church.
I have come to give you life that
