Five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Sunday, the network said, with the Israel Defense Forces claiming one was a Hamas leader posing as a journalist.

The network said that Anas al-Sharif; another journalist, Mohammed Qreiqeh; and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa were killed.

When Fox News won't even give an overt defense of the action, that should be a red flag for anyone defending the IDF's actions on this one

Rule of thumb, if Fox News is giving a "neutral report", that means there's little to no opportunity for "pro-Israel spin" on the particular story.

Theres a lot more amiss than just whats in this story.

I think its pretty clear Israel wants to simply clear the whole land and will inflict whatever war crimes are needed for it. (And my inclinations around this war started very pro Israel and remained there for a stubborn and embarrassing long time.)

I'm there with you...

As someone who feels that Hamas is evil, and that fundamentalist Islam is the most destructive ideology on the planet at the current moment, I stopped my Israel support a month or two ago.

Not to be confused with the pro-Palestinian support, I'm still not on-board with that (for the same reason why I wouldn't become pro Cali cartel to oppose the Medellin cartel).

My current position can more accurately described by saying "we shouldn't be giving hefty military or financial support to any nation whose religious proclivities dictate that they shouldn't eat bacon cheeseburgers"

Sounds superficial...sure, but it overlaps almost perfectly with the list of countries who I don't feel are worthy of getting our taxpayer dollars.

We work for that money, none of it should be going towards settling thousand year old religious beefs 4 thousand miles away.

For the most well-known one (Anas al-Sharif) I think the IDF has published sufficient evidence he was an active Hamas operative; personally I've seen his X-statement from 2023 where he celebrated the killings of October 7th. Their Al-Jazeera job was part of their Hamas propaganda. I would argue this seems a perfectly justifiable attack with precision ammunition to take out an enemy.

Even if true, this would not establish Hamas membership.
The X-post does not establish Hamas membership .. but the docs and info the IDF found on him do - check those details - I have no doubt.

Like that's such a bad thing.

It's almost like people think Hamas just fell out of the sky. The people in Gaza are good. So are the journalists. It's those nasty Hamas members who are bad, somehow. If only they hadn't fallen out of the sky. Too bad all of Gaza is bad. They get what they deserve.

Of course, we all get what we deserve: The universal law of justice.

I have significant doubt. As do some international bodies. Obviously, it would be good to get more clarity on this issue. In the fog of war, and the lack of outside journalists in Gaza, it may not be forthcoming.

At the time, Al Jazeera, along with a United Nations expert, the Committee to Protect Journalists and other groups cast doubt on the veracity of the documents. The U.N. special rapporteur on freedom of expression, Irene Khan, denounced Israel’s accusations against Al-Sharif in July as “unfounded” and a “blatant attempt to endanger his life and silence his reporting on the genocide in Gaza.”
