  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's not up to her to correct an (intentional) mistranslation by The Blaze. The transcript and video are availble.

"Honoring my Guatemalan ancestry only strengthens my commitment to America. That is the truth I carry with me always."

I don't understand why anyone would take issue with that sentiment.

Given the fact that "mistranslation" is what's getting her all this flak? Yes, absolutely, it's on her to correct it.

Various Spanish speakers I have seen have given different interpretations of the key remark, some interpreting it as "Guatemalan before American" and others "American before Guatemalan". There appears widespread consensus, regardless of interpretation, that what she said was not correct Spanish, which is no doubt exactly what led to these contrasting interpretations.

If her goal was to say she was first American but phrased it poorly, she could have easily solved the problem in her statement she gave that was explicitly referring to the controversy. Instead, she never said this. Her lack of correction is what clinched it for me that the "Guatemalan before American" translation was indeed correct.

There's not a lot to be proud of as an American right now. This is a shameful time for America, and we should all be ashamed for letting this happen.

The "flak" was triggered by one tweet courtesy of "The Blaze" and then echoed by the MAGA media.

The Blae should issue a correction.
