lol, I guess I should have been reading with my special liberal glasses which make you see what you want to see even if it's not there.
Well, let me know when the right-wing outrage machine starts criticizing a politician for expressing pride in their white, European heritage and then I'll gladly retract my statement.

You're missing the point. She didn't express pride in any ethnic or racial heritage, she expressed pride in the nationality of Guatemala. I've never seen a photo of her, for all I know she could be of white European heritage.

But for the sake of argument, pretending that the article's translation were correct, if an Irish-American politician said he was more proud of Ireland than America, that would certainly raise my eyebrows.

You're missing the point.

No, I don't think I am.

She didn't express pride in any ethnic or racial heritage, she expressed pride in the nationality of Guatemala.

Dang, you split those hairs so finely that I'm tempted to DM you about tuning up my kitchen knives.

If you rewind and listen to the portion of her speech that was in English (which I concede is a bit tough because there's still an interpreter talking over it), she repeatedly talked about her Guatemalan heritage and how she's a daughter of both countries.

I've never seen a photo of her, for all I know she could be of white European heritage.
So you didn't click any of the links in the OP? You're just riffing and ignorantly passing on the claims of a bunch of fear-mongers and race baiters? Nice.

Why don't you give the media a call and tell them you dispute their translation?
A lame retort to actual facts. @wing2000 was letting us know what the congresswoman actually said. Why take umbrage with that?

GUATEMALAN heritage. I have an American heritage. Ever hear the opening theme song to the show American Dad? You know the part where he sings about "the American race"? It's supposed to be a joke.

There was only one link in the OP. I clicked on it. There's no photo of her.

There were plenty of links in the article.
I don't care about what people look like. I care a little about what they think and say and do sometimes, especially if they're a politician.

"Ramirez, whose district stretches from DuPage County to Chicago’s Northwest Side, has since attempted to clarify her intent, saying on X that “honoring my Guatemalan ancestry only strengthens my commitment to America.”
That’s a message we all can embrace. But the damage was done. At a time when trust in public officials is already fragile, statements like hers erode confidence and invite exactly the kind of backlash she’s facing."

The "damage was done" by one tweet mis-intepreting what she said. Citing the Tribune's editorial isn't going to change that fact.

Here's the updated CNN reporting:

GOP lawmaker pushes to strip Democrat of committee assignment after saying she’s ‘a proud Guatemalan before

I am an American’

Addressing on Monday the blowback she had received for the remark, Ramirez, an American citizen born to Guatemalan immigrants, argued that “honoring (her) Guatemalan ancestry only strengthens (her) commitment to America.”
“No one questions when my white colleagues identify as Irish-American, Italian-American, or Ukrainian-American to honor their ancestry. I’ve consistently expressed pride in my heritage and history - a pride also often reflected in the origin stories of my colleagues,” she said at the time.

She's right.

“I’m a Proud Irish woman Before I’m an American”

-'The Blaze'. [As you well know, the Blaze would never issue such a tweet. Why is that? ]

If she was mis-translated as you claim, why didn't she say that in the statement she released? If it were me, that'd be the first thing I'd mention. In fact, it'd be the only thing I'd need to mention.

It's not up to her to correct an (intentional) mistranslation by The Blaze. The transcript and video are availble.

"Honoring my Guatemalan ancestry only strengthens my commitment to America. That is the truth I carry with me always."

I don't understand why anyone would take issue with that sentiment.

Yes it absolutely is.

Those words are not the ones she's being criticized for.
