....so long as the architecture of the addition is consistent with the existing building, I have no objection. The interior design taste of Trump can be changed in the future.

Why not let the people pay for it? It's a public building. My guess is Trump didn't want to wait for the funding process to play out.

Is the White House ballroom supposed to look more like this since it's American?:

IMO, American public building should reflect the character of America....not French Haute Bourgeoisie.

Sure, that's why the exterior of the White House is Greco-Roman. Along with the Capitol Bulding. However the Washington Monument at least is Egyptian. Most of "American Colonial" design is actually European, including French. Even the Statue of Liberty is French.

"President Donald Trump, a longtime developer, is overseeing the construction of a $200 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom that will remake the East Wing of the White House, effecting one of the biggest changes to “the People’s House” in a century."

The project will be funded by MAGA donors and is planned to start in the Fall.

“They’ve wanted a ballroom at the White House for more than 150 years, but there’s never been a president that was good at ballrooms — really good, in fact,” Trump said at a news conference Thursday, adding: “When they have big events — you entertain the president of China, the president of any place — and you have big crowds, they’ve always had a tent.”

The problem with it is that it goes totally cross grain of what the idea of what Government should be. It makes it seem super riches gold looking are hoarded up in man made structures instead of just collecting enough taxes to pay for essential services. It's supposed to be the Government serving the people not the people serving the Government.

And people are such fans these days that they will cheer for it when it glorifies their favorite, even if they personally are underwater with credit card debt etc.. So weird.

I am reminded of a story.
Anyone remember the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon?
An emperor was coming and Francis was asked, what should we say to him,
What can we say to an emperor or a president surrounded in wealth?

Francis says, "You could tell him to throw his scepter in the mud or fling his jewels in the river. Then he could see the glow of new colors amidst the glistening pebbles. And you could say, 'Otto of Brunswick, let the birds nest in your crown. Let the winds of heaven blow through your empty palaces. What good is your life to you if your riches bring you no peace of mind? And all your people starve?"

So, what can one say to Trump if the opportunity presented itself?

"Take a lesson from Warren Buffett and give away the cast portion of your money to worthy causes. Then you will have wealth in heaven?"

"Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give food to the hungry? then you will be meeting Christ?"

Of course even we like a prosperity version of the Gospel. But that is not even Gospel. Is it?
Jesus never promoted material wealth for his followers. In fact, quite the opposite.

Reminds me of the mega opulence of Vatican city and all the cathedrals.

And empty cathedrals at that, sometimes. if you think you got a jab in because I am Catholic you do not know me very well.

More interested in making a bit of a point rather than a personal jab. Also there are opulent Protestant cathedrals as well.

For those saying it's "tacky"...what are they expecting?, it's a ballroom lol.

The pomp and circumstance of "hosting a ball" is, in and of itself, "over the top" by that definition. It's a bunch of fancy people wearing bowties and eating overpriced food with a classical music backdrop.

When we look at it (I mean objectively, not through a lens of "Trump's doing it, so that makes it a special kind of tacky")

Does this:
1754486546967.png

Really look anymore gawdy or tacky than this?

1754486820666.png

(Le Grand Salon in Paris - regarded as one of the most "elegant" and "classy" ballrooms in Europe)

Or any of the other ones regarded to be "the best ones"

What, were people expecting it to look like a conference room at the airport Marriott?
