In context, God had rejected Saul from being king over Israel, and he had now chosen David, one of the sons of Jesse to be king, only Samuel did not yet know which son of Jesse that God had chosen. So, when he first looked at Jesse’s son Eliab he thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him.”
And this is a very important lesson for us to learn from, too. For so many people do make judgments of other people, for good or for evil, based on outward appearance only, without consideration of who they might be in reality, in heart, in mind, and in soul. For some people are very good at performing in front of an audience, and at giving off whatever impression they want people to believe about them, whether true or not true. And so outwardly they may appear all goodness, but inwardly not be good at all.
Some people who are physically attractive, charming, articulate, well read, intelligent, gifted at public speaking, who may have particular credentials and diplomas which give them credibility, outwardly may appear to be “good Christians.” For they know how to speak the lingo, and they have been instructed in all the right things to do and to say in order to gain popularity among the people. But in reality, they are like the Pharisees. They are hypocrites who profess one thing outwardly, but while they live another.
And then there may be people who are lacking in charm and book smarts and credentials and diplomas, who do not say all the right things to all the right people so that people will like them and follow them. They have no titles before their names which give them credibility in today’s world. They are not well known, not popular, and not public speakers. But they love Jesus with their whole being, and their lives are committed to serving him with their lives. And they may be among the discarded and the rejected.
And so the lesson here for us all is to not make judgments of other people based on things outwardly that appear good, which may not be good. Don’t raise up people with diplomas and certain credentials thinking that they are godly people just because they have a title of “Reverend” or pastor before their names, and they have studied Greek and they have a seminary degree, or just because they are called a missionary, or an elder, or a deacon, etc. Titles don’t make people who they are. What’s in their hearts does.
So, don’t go by appearance and prestige and charm or education and titles. Pray for spiritual discernment when you listen to anyone preach or teach the Scriptures. And test what they are teaching against the Scriptures, taught in their appropriate biblical context. For many preachers these days are teaching Scriptures out of context and are twisting their words to make them say what they do not say if taught in the correct biblical context. And they are leading many people astray with their lies and deceptions. So..
Be students of the Scriptures yourselves, who study them in context, and who are putting the word of God into practice in your daily lives. For the Scriptures do not teach that we can just pray a prayer to receive Christ and now all our sins are forgiven, and we are guaranteed heaven when we die, but regardless of how we live. By faith in Christ, which comes from God, we die to sin and obey his commandments, in practice. But if sin is what we practice, and not obedience to God, we will not inherit eternal life with God.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7 NASB1995)
