The word is new to me: Derecho.

Defining A Derecho

A single severe thunderstorm may produce an area of damaging winds only a mile or two wide and perhaps a few miles long, but derechos can produce damage tens of miles wide and hundreds of miles long.

To be called a derecho, the thunderstorm-generated high winds and wind damage should cover a distance of at least 250 miles long and produce at least a handful of 74+ mph wind gusts, according to a January 2025 proposal led by Brian Squitieri.

They are most numerous in late-spring and summer, particularly in the Great Plains and Midwest.

(MORE: Derechoes 101)

Sound super dangerous, like a plains hurricane with tornadoes thrown in for good measure.

Ive heard of these over the last few years. I used to wonder if the new nomenclature is just Weather Channel etc hyping things for viewer enthusiasm.
It's not just Weather.com but also NOAA. Apparently, the term was pushed in a January 2025 paper by Brian Squitieri (Andrew R. Wade, and Israel L. Jirak) in the Bulletin of American Meteorological Society (linkie).

Do you have these storms in Colorado? I thought it was a plains thing, like the rains in Spain.
Otoh, weather extremes are becoming more common on average.
We were warned.

Not in the mountainy zones, where I am. CO does extend out into the plains. Most CO people dont give that part of the state much thought tho.

I was familiar with the term, but did some digging, and... dug a little deeper, and... TIL...

Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs (1836-1923) was Danish born (current day Germany) and trained as a chemist at the University of Copenhagen and the Polytechnic School in Copenhagen. He emigrated to the United States in 1861 and settled in Davenport, Iowa, where he taught foreign languages in the local school system.

Gustavus Hinrichs instituted first state weather service in Iowa in 1875. Ironically, the decline of his science teaching program provided time for the development of his weather research efforts.

The First Formal Publication using the Term Derecho

Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs, 1888: Tornadoes and Derechos, American Meteorological Journal, pp. 306-317 and 341-349.

Why would a Dane use a Spanish word? LINK.

The word didn't catch on immediately, but was resurrected ~100 years after Hinrichs coined it.
