The federal government has collected about $100 billion in tariff revenue since the Trump administration instituted its higher import duties earlier this year, which could increase to $300 billion per year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria" on Tuesday.

With Indonesia and the Philippines agreeing to zero tariffs on our country but paying tariffs of 19% on exports I expect more and more countries to cut a deal. But I would be more comfortable paying off the debt. Imagine if the Democrats took over again--the debt would be out of control and our country might never recover.

Based on what law? Previous "early refunds" had all been based on new tax law changes applied retroactively and then paid out as an "advance" on an expected tax rebate. More revenue from unauthorized tariff increases does not meet these criteria.

I think the hatred drummed about against Trump blinds people from seeing any benefit of tariffs. It turns out that most of the liberal economists were wrong and that very little of the tariffs were passed on to the consumer. Many countries had huge profit margins and took advantage of the Biden administration. Overall that means a huge gain for the average American. Inherently taxes are neither better nor worse than tariffs, but Democrats are against the tariffs because Trump enacted the tariffs. How many countries had tariffs on U.S. goods at the end of the Biden administration. 170? Did you ever stop and consider if tariffs are such a bad idea why in the world the majority of countries of the world put tariffs on U.S. goods?

Yes, yes, it’s all blind hatred. No other possible explanation for disagreeing with this.

Eh. No economists, at least those who believe in free markets, will ever conclude that broad tariffs are beneficial.

It turns out that most of the liberal economists were wrong and that very little of the tariffs were passed on to the consumer. '

IOW, American businesses are absorbing the additional cost....for now. That is not sustainable.

From the article posted in the OP (emphasis added)
Tariffs vary from country to country, but they're paid by U.S. importers, such as Walmart, or manufacturers that import materials and components from other countries, like Ford Motor. So far, some companies have been swallowing the higher costs rather than passing them on to consumers, although the latest inflation report signaled that higher tariff rates may be edging into consumer prices.

Rebate checks have been floated by Mr. Trump previously, with the president saying in February he was considering using 20%
This is consistent with other reporting I have seen on the tariffs.
So far U.S. companies are absorbing the costs. The foreign countries are NOT paying them.
At some point, those costs will pass to consumers.
When and how much is the mystery.

The refund idea is entertaining.
(anecdote) When I was of elementary age, an uncle saw me playing with some coins. He said, "I'll give you a penny for every nickel you can stand on its edge." I promptly stood three nickels up on their edge expecting three more pennies. He took the nickels and gave me pennies in their place laughing at my naivety.
This refund seems to be the same sort of scam on US companies and citizens.

Trump considering rebate checks - complaints.
Well, yeah. Vital programs were closed, revenue has been slashed, the debt has risen - what would be the point of the rebate? Ratings?

How would these rebates be structured? Would the biggest chunk go to the richest folk like the Bush tax rebates that folded FICA and MediFICA funds into the general revenue, declared a surplus without regards to future obligations, and gave the most money to those who payed the least percentage into FICA.

From the OP article:
Federal debt, which currently stands at more than $36 trillion, is projected to rise due to the new tax cuts and spending bill signed into law by Mr. Trump on July 4, according to forecasts from economists and public policy think tanks. The nation's deficit could rise by $3.4 trillion over the next 10 years because of the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Bipartisan Policy Center said, citing estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation.

Mr. Trump added that the rebate could be "for people of a certain income level," although he didn't specify the threshold that he's considering.

This is not credible in any way. There been umpteen discussions on tariffs and you still don't know who pays them. How can anyone take anything you say on the matter seriously?

People need to understand that there is no evil in tariffs, that tariffs are different than taxes but not necessarily superior or inferior. The positive thing is that Trump can bargain with tariffs in areas that are not monetary.

I remember too that Inflation was going to be transitory.
It certainly came down from its recent highs by the start of the year, though not quite back to where the Fed likes it (2%).

Even more recently, I remember Trump said he would 'end inflation' on Day One.

The Democrats were warned that the crazy unnecessary spending would cause inflation and they went ahead and did it anyways--and the American people suffered. If you want to take Trump's comment about ending inflation to mean inflation would be forever at exactly 0.000 percent that is your prerogative. Maybe that's the best shot you have against Trump.

I remember too that Inflation was going to be transitory. I missed the news about Indonesia:

Trump celebrates historic Indonesian trade deal: ‘We will pay no tariffs’

You really have no idea. The deal means that Indonesians won't be paying any extra on US imports. But you will be paying 19% more on anything you buy from them. You must like paying more. You seem quite excited by it.
