I love black metal, but yeah the satanic imagery is pretty cringe and cheesy. I just love the sound and vocals. Really, a lot of black metal is just The Beach Boys sound with heavy distortion.
More Dick Dale than Beach Boys, but yeah it's kind of a gag in the genre "Trve Kvlt Svrf Metal"

I doubt most black metal musicians are actual Nazis. A lot of that is a subgenre within Black Metal. National Socialist Black Metal. Although Communist Black Metal exists too.

The Black Metal guys, at least the early ones, saw it as either real, being theistic Satanists or at least pretending to be to "combat Christianity"

I don't know why, but this post made me think of the Norm MacDonald joke about Satanism.

"Some of the members of the Church of Satan are strict about wanting you to attend weekly services, but I don't. Because I, for one, feel like I can be just as close to Satan on a golf course as I can in some stuffy old Satanic temple."

As much as I enjoy metal the sub genre minutia blunders into people’s front of judea vs judean people’s front territory very quickly.

I do not take metal sub genres too seriously. Especially within reason. They can be useful when looking to listen to a particular sound or lyrical content. The reason I brought up these sub-genres was to counter the idea that Black Metal is filled with mainly Nazis. Not saying anyone is actually saying that here, but I did read a few posts that urged me to post a clarification.

To my knowledge most of the early influential people in Black Metal did not identify as Nazis. A huge figure called Varg Vikernes does, and probably was an inspiration for others. That guy is pretty warped in the head, although also a funny meme at this point. To bring back to Ozzy's death. Varg made a tweet mocking his death, although some of his own fans have even chewed him out for it.

Typical Varg.

Unfortunately, I think that Pantera had a hand in that (even if it was inadvertent)

But given that the "Nazi rock" is typically of the "grindcore" genre (which is adjacent to Metal genres)...it's easy to see how some made that leap.

I suspect that his use of the the "rebel" symbolism was more in the theme of that of other musicians who used it and not a sincere sign of racism.

It's more meant as a "southern pride" thing than a racism thing unfortunately anyone outside of the South does not see it that way. In the South they teach the Civil war as being about "state's rights" and refer to it as "the war of Northern Aggression"
In the North it's taught as being about Slavery....

In the West we were taught.. it was about states claiming they had the right.... to slavery. Like yeah, it was about "states rights" but the right they were claiming was the right to own chattel slaves.

Why do they need to make a special fuss over "pride"?

I mean, I get it with gay people who were told forever that they are worthless and outcasts. But the south? There must be a lot of internalized shame they are fighting.

You've got it completely backwards. There's a great Norm MacDonald bit about gay pride, but I can't post it because it's not safe for CF.

You've obviously never heard Sweet Home Alabama.

Apparently Neil Young said a mean thing about the south. Gosh that must have hurt!

I think there's more similarities there than people realize...

Research from the University of Chicago and the University of Munich confirms that people with strong regional [southern] accents face a wage penalty of 20% compared to those who speak with a “standard accent.” This wage penalty is equivalent to that of the gender wage gap. And a recent survey of 3,000 job applicants by Writing Tips Institute found that over one-third (38%) say that they ‘soften’ their regional twangs in their job interviews, in an effort to make their accents more generalized, for fear of negative stereotypes.

...and I think "regional pride" isn't necessarily confined to the south. Get a New Yorker and a Bostonian in a bar and ask which city is better and you may have to duck for cover behind a table.

I've heard there are schools where some southerners go to be trained to lose their accent.

Everyone should have a few crybaby cards in their deck. Seriously the Skynyrd "comeback" line always felt kind of flabby when I heard it.

How did we get here anyway? Oh yeah, somehow we diverted to metal as a vehicle for grotesque ideologies.

I think it's brilliant and bold, and I think it might be the first dis track.

Are you trying to imply that Skynyrd had a grotesque ideology?

I dont doubt it. The accent for ages has been emblematic of a backwards ideology that got mapped onto an entire region due to certain political aggregations.

Obviously this is unfair to all sorts of individuals who have and had zero interest in clinging to backwards notions.

No. They seem like ok fellows to me, in my limited knowledge of them. But its understandable when people think the "southern flag" stands for race based anti liberty ideology given the history.

They are a great band for sure, even if I'm personally kind of bored by their product.

There are people who think the same thing about the American flag.
