Why Kerr County balked on a new flood warning system

Kerr County did not opt for (American Rescue Plan Act) ARPA to fund flood warning systems despite commissioners discussing such projects nearly two dozen times since 2016. In fact, a survey sent to residents about ARPA spending showed that 42% of the 180 responses wanted to reject the $10 million bonus altogether, largely on political grounds.
“I’m here to ask this court today to send this money back to the Biden administration, which I consider to be the most criminal treasonous communist government ever to hold the White House,” one resident told commissioners in April 2022, fearing strings were attached to the money.
“We don't want to be bought by the federal government, thank you very much,” another resident told commissioners. “We'd like the federal government to stay out of Kerr County and their money.”
Even Kelly, the Kerr County judge remarked that this “old law partner” – U.S. Sen. John Cornyn – had told him that if the county did not spend the money it would go back to blue states.
The hatred for anything brought to you by Dems is intolerable, and well, what's that quote from Forrest Gump's Mom?

While it might be good to be principled on the use of money, when funds from the Federal Government are allotted, the default position should be to take them. Why? Because you paid into the system. Of course if there is no benefit then sure it seems ok to refuse but this was not the case and so poor policy guided this decision.

I saw the same in Medicaid expansion in my former state. They refused to expand it for several years, because they thought it would hurt the state finances later on. It is true that the Federal government may shift costs down the road. Still, monies could help people get the medical care they need for the years the Feds will provide it. Eventually this and many other red states took the Medicaid money. Yes, down the line there can be cuts. So the state can then cut services if they need to. This alarm program though was basically a one time cost so it is a shame that ideology got in the way of safety. Alternatively, the county could have funded a system on their own and maintained their ideology had they wanted.

I too lived in a state that has no tornado warning system. It is not tornado alley but there are tornadoes sometimes at night, a time when alarms are the most needed. I fear that they too will lose lives because of poor planning.
Democrats too have failures in safety. Often they refuse solutions that can control mass shootings in schools because of their ideology. Hopefully everyone thinks wisely on the options especially when lives are at risk.

It seems a pretty stupid mindset.

You live in a dangerous area; not taking money to make that area safer isn't actually the principled stance these people consistently think.
Children died because you didn't want to take federal money that would have protected them?

I mean.....what?

IMHO - Using the death of innocents to promote a political perspective is about as low as it gets...

It was a natural disaster - just three days before the authorities reviewed the evacuation plans the camp is required to have and approved them. How do you prepare for a flood that rose 32 feet in less than an hour?

Good grief - let them mourn the loss of their children without making them have to relive it by making a political swipe at the party you do not agree with. They are not even buried yet.

Kindness and compassion are what is needed - not politicizing.

That is my .02

Kindness and compassion need to be displayed toward the families struck. No doubt about that. But if no lessons are learned from this tragedy, if no steps are taken to improve prevention and response then more families will be hit in the future.
The request not to politicize this isn't kindness, it is an attempt to evade accountability.

Listen to Trump's answer to a CBS reporter's question (28:40 to 30:00)

The only thing Trump does is
1) depicting the rescuers as heroes and heroines (rightly so, they deserve all the credits)
but
2) discrediting the journalist for asking a question about how the consequences could have been mitigated before the catatstrophe struck.
Which means, avoiding accountability for what the authorities did, including DOGE under the direct supervision and approval of Donald Trump.
Nope, anyone asking anything about prevention is evil and a bad person, per The President of the United States.

That's true, but the area has had the issue since the 1980's -

I made no such request - I offered my opinion as evidence by IMHO at the very start.

What changes did DOGE make, in the last 90 days, that stopped what the Biden Administration could not do in the four years before? Keeping mind the funding has been available since 2020.

This is nothing but a partisan swipe at the party one does not like - and because of that, it doesn't honor the dead nor the men and women who are the real hero's.

Kindness and compassion , like "thoughts and prayers," are useless without action.
Why do the parents of children murdered in school shootings keep advocating desperately hopefully, driven by God for sensible gun regulations? They have lost their children, but they want to know that their children's deaths will make a difference in the safety of other children, that their lives will have had meaning.

The parents of the children who died at camp will forever be heartbroken, but knowing that a siren alert system will be established in rural areas around the country will give them a little bit of comfort. Every parent I know who has lost a child, and there are many, try to create a legacy of good for others and the world. My cousin whose firefighter son died on 9/11 as raised almost a million dollars in scholarships for children of firefighters.
These families have lost their children, and we can never bring them back. Let's not deny them the small comfort to see that their children's deaths have opened the eyes of government to make a difference. And while we're at it let's do the same for the parents of Sandy Hook. They have waited too long in their valiant fight to make schools safer.

You're one step behind. The use of political perspective to not just deny, but spit in the eye of those providing funds to pay for a system you know darn well you need, is about a low as it gets. That system in place would have saved lives.

Oh, the drama! - Why didn't Biden do one thing about it when the funds were already available?

Biden Admin had the funds for four years - why didn't they do ANYTHING with them?

The Federal Government provides the funds, the states and the county within those states decide how that money is allocated.
Kern County believed using the money to provide a warning system that had been trying to get for years, was somehow tied to some government conspiracy and told Biden et al to go pound sand. That conspiratorial mindset we see deeply set in conservatives, cost them lives. It's no different then Covid vaccinations and the current rise in measles outbreaks. Again, I quote Forrest Gump's Mother.

And don't forget about all the funding Biden provided for green energy so that America would reduce its carbon footprint, slow or reverse existing climate change, and therefore prevent all the climactic tragedies that have occurred way too frequently due to our fossil fuel use.

Apparently Always in his Presence would prefer if the federal government had marched into the town and installed the system against the will of the citizens living there.

Republicans vote against themselves. They are so worried about other people rights. They vote against themselves. It's sad so many people died. Maybe with Trump tax cuts for the rich. The rich people in Texas and the churches can pay for their own issues, And I even say that about the upper middle class and rich people in California. No, I don't feel bad about bad things, that happen in Red states. (Except that people died. Especially kid's.) Since Republicans vote against themselves. And they don't seem to care about the fires, that happens in California. Hopefully the upper middle class and rich and churches will take care of the people in their own state. Also didn't Trump plan on cutting FEMA and other programs, that help worn people against bag weather.
