Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth did not inform the White House before he authorized a pause on weapons shipments to Ukraine last week, according to five sources familiar with the matter, setting off a scramble inside the administration to understand why the halt was implemented and explain it to Congress and the Ukrainian government.President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that he was not responsible for the move. Asked on Tuesday during a Cabinet meeting whether he approved of the pause in shipments, Trump demurred, saying only that the US would continue to send defensive weapons to Ukraine. Pressed again on who authorized the pause, Trump replied, “I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?”
The episode underscores the often-haphazard policy-making process inside the Trump administration, particularly under Hegseth at the Defense Department. The pause was the second time this year that Hegseth had decided to halt the flow of US weapons to Ukraine, catching senior national security officials off guard, sources said.
It first happened in February and the decision was quickly reversed, three of the sources said — mirroring what happened on Monday night, when Trump announced that the weapons shipments would continue despite Hegseth signing off on the pause.
Two of the sources attributed Hegseth’s not informing the White House to the fact that he has no chief of staff or trusted advisers around him that might urge him to coordinate major policy decisions better with the interagency partners.

The memo rescinds a myriad of Biden-era restrictions that stifled the use and production of small, cheap Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) on the battlefield, while also paving a more streamlined path for American products and materials to be approved for drone manufacturing, Hegseth announced in a bombastic X post Thursday. Small, expendable drones have shown their effectiveness in wars across the world, most notably in Ukraine and in covert Israeli strikes on Iranian air defenses during their bombing campaigns against nuclear facilities in June.

Actually, I'd be interested to see a poll of veterans about Hegseth. From the ones I've talked to, and what I've seen of active duty military who will speak privately (they aren't allowed to speak publicly, and even privately can be problematic), the disapprove of him and find that his lack of operational security puts military members lives in jeopardy.

GOP senators question Hegseth’s leadership after weapons ‘goof-up’
Senate Republicans are “alarmed” by reporting that Hegseth may have paused weapons shipments to Ukraine multiple times without their knowledge and they want details for who at the Pentagon was involved in freezing shipments.Some of the sharpest criticism in the Republican conference came from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) who told CNN in an interview that Hegseth is “out of his depth” leading the Pentagon and that his decision to stop weapons shipments to Ukraine was “amateurish.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a leading advocate for helping Ukraine defend itself from Russia, said Congress would need to get to “the bottom” of who ordered the weapons freeze and why.
Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) said Congress should conduct “oversight” on the issue.
Several Republican senators criticized what one lawmaker called a “rookie mistake” by the secretary of Defense and senior members of his team.
“I hope we don’t see a Department of Defense where you have certain individuals who don’t have the authority think they can assume the authority” to unilaterally freeze weapons shipments, said a Republican senator who requested anonymity.
Trump reversed the weapons freeze Monday and told reporters Tuesday he was not aware of who ordered it.
Some GOP sources on Capitol Hill warn that if Hegseth or senior members of his team acted to deliberately circumvent the commander in chief, it would pose a serious problem that would need to be addressed.

That's very interesting - I am a vet and everyone I know support the man. He is a decorated soldier and he is 100% for us. I have three friends who are active duty, who are combat officers - they report that they are much better off with him at the helm.

Right, 'if' the 2020 election was stolen for Biden, it would be a serious problem. What do we do? Investigate (or sue) and see how things turn out. GOP senators appear interested in doing so. There's a finding out phase before the finding out phase.
This rogue act was just a week ago when 'somebody' stopped shipping arms to Ukraine. The horse isn't even feeling bad.

We know it wasn't Trump because he didn't even know it had happened. If the Defence Secretary unilaterally decided to stop sending arms to Ukraine without telling Trump, then you have a big problem. If you are suggesting that Hegseth didn't do it and someone else made the call without telling either of them, then you have a huge problem.

I'm not saying that it's true. But one of the options I gave must logically be true. Either Hegseth stopped the shipments (or knew they were being stopped) without telling Trump. Or someone else did without telling either of them.
Either way, you have a big problem. Which do you prefer? The president being kept in the dark by his Defence Secretary? Or both of of them being kept in the dark by someone else?
