Trump announces 50 percent tariff on Brazil, citing Bolsonaro trial

“The way that Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, a Highly Respected Leader throughout the World during his Term, including by the United States, is an international disgrace,” Trump wrote Wednesday in a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “This Trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!”

"Last year, the U.S. trade surplus with Brazil reached $6.8 billion."

The Brazilian government is holding a former presdient accoutnable for his actions. Apparently, that's too much for Donald Trump to swallow.

I remember in the past, some folks expressing a lot of concern over Biden's "interfer[ing] in another countries [sic] government".

I wonder if this situation will elicit the same sort of concern.

“What audacity to believe he knows what 'is best interest" for another nation. Using your position and funding to pressure another nation to do what you want is worse than quid pro quo and he should be censured and made to apologize to Israel.”

If the president really felt there was some injustice going on, I think the usual step would be targeted sanctions of some sort. But Trump's favorite hammer is tariffs and now anything he doesn't like looks like a nail.

Trump will keep wielding his tariff sword...until (if?) a court stops him.

“Is a Brazilian political issue a threat to U.S. economic or national security?” Mr. Murphy asked, before offering an answer: “That seems like a bridge too far.”
