You think rootbeer floats decide what ultimately gets published in news media?
No - I'm just as off topic as you.

One of the strengths of a Democracy is that the media is designed to be unbiased
No, it's not. Media outlets are designed to make money: they are businesses. The way they do that is to report on news events. Fair and unbiased reporting used to be the best way to gain readers, but that simply isn't the case any more. Witness how popular outlets like Fox News are.

Though, many media outlets still try to do that. Some more than others, of course.

they should not have the power to determine what is reported and what is not
But they do.

First Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That power is guaranteed by the US Constitution.

- that is a description of a media in a totalitarian nation - which we are not.
The media in a totalitarian nation would be controlled by the government. Here, it isn't.

You don't have to like what the media says, same as the President doesn't have to like it, but the Constitution guarantees the press' right to print (or broadcast) whatever they want to.

-- A2SG, not like "the media" is one single thing anyway....if you don't agree with one media outlet, find another one you do agree with....

On the contrary- a free press has the freedom to exactly report what they want. Who else would decide what to be reported? The state? That would be totalitarian.
Well you see, that's kinda the sign here. USA is taking its baby steps there. Little things first, it doesn't happen over night.

I had the misfortune of watchig one this morning. Reporters would ask questions, and he would start extemporaneously inventing the most bizarre and outrageous scenarios, usually ending with self-praise because he saw himself as so much smarter than the person he was criticizing.

After two or three of these forays, I wondered why they even bother to ask questions. All the press is doing is giving him the time to spread lies, hatred, and revenge fantasies. Did he really answer one of the questions about Iran by talking about how he had won the 2020 election, everyone knew he did, Democrats tinkered with the vote. Really? Yes, really.

And then, "Are you going to bomb Iran?" To which he said maybe yes, maybe no, he won't know until it happens.

CNN related later that a source confided that Trump had already drawn up bombing plans and authorization the night before.

And then I just SMH. Because if he did that, we'll be reading about it in "The Atlantic" tomorrow morning.

No more press briefings--don't give him the opportunity to obfuscate, threaten, bully, insult, revisit past grievances...Give him one chance to answer a question. If he doesn't, leave with your microphone and camera, saying "No air time for you!"
It sells papers and clicks. It’s like the conjoined twins in the ghastly old freak shows.

It’s what sells.

This is what a lot of people don't understand about the media. Media outlets are businesses, their goal is to make money. How do they make that money? Not by reporting news.

They sell ads. Sure, there might be a small source of revenue from newspaper sales or cable subscriptions, but the majority of revenue made by any media outlet is through advertising. So what people need to understand about the media is that the news is NOT their product.

We are.

Media outlets provide their advertisers with an audience that can see their ads. The news is basically a loss leader, they only report on the news to bring people in to read the papers or watch their channel.

So whether or not the news is reported accurately isn't the point. It's whether or not the news reported brings an audience to their advertisers. So, if Fox News gets more viewers by, oh, I dunno, let's say by lying about who won an election, then that's what they'll do. They get bigger ratings, their advertisers are happy, and their shareholders are happy. Everyone is happy. Well, everyone who matters is happy.

Now, all that said....most reporters who report the news are trying to do so as factually and as accurately as they can. That's why they became journalists. (Well, usually. Some do it for ego, but that's beside the point.) But reporters are not the ones who decide what is printed or what goes on the air. That's what editors are for. And editors, while they may also be driven by a desire to report news fairly and accurately, are answerable to the media outlet's management, owners and shareholders.

So when people criticize the media for only reporting on what sells....that's what they're in business for!

-- A2SG, it's as true for Sean Hannity and Fox News today as it was for W.R. Hearst a century ago.....

Great question. Like that time in early June 1944 when a reporter asked FDR "are you going to invade the coast of Normandy?"
I have just read a Biogrphy of FDR and it left me wondering if FDR was the playbook for DJT save that he want to roll back the NEW DEAL.

Wow, they are at completely opposite ends of the spectrum. The only possible commonality is that FDR was elected four times, and Trump would be elected four times or at least he would try to be elected four times if the Constitution did not prevent it

Maybe if Biden would not have starved the media with press conferences they wouldn’t be as interested in Trump. Not only the record for less conferences but also looked like he was being manipulated by a puppet master. Just give the guy an ice cream and let him roam the rose garden.

I think the press is more interested in Trump's news conferences because he has not been transparent in many ways. They know that the constitution is being violated frequently. After the bombing, Senator Tim Kaine told the Press that Trump gave Republicans a briefing on what had happened but did not include Democrats. And of course that means only one thing--that a republican was the leaker. I am grateful for that Republican because his leaks forced the Department of Defense to invite The Joint Chiefs of Staff to a press conference this morning to answer questions and to thoroughly explain everything that happened. I listened to most of what the chairman said but only a few sentences of what Hegseth said. I was very disappointed that Hegseth interrupted the flow of the conference and answered questions the general should have answered. Hegseth insulted the questioners, lambasted the media for pursuing the truth, and dodging questions. The general stood with head downcast, perhaps fervently praying he could work for people who allowed the experts to do their jobs without interference.
No questions were answered honestly and respectfully.

I did appreciate the General's pictures, videos, and talk. He should have answered the questions instead of Hegseth.

I liked the information, and answers, from the General and also from the Secretary of Defense.

He overwhelmed them from the day he first announced he was running and they have not turned off the microphones since. If he sneezed, the news would run and report it.

What if Biden had held a press briefing and nobody asked tough and difficult questions?......Oh, wait.....that already happened......And nobody here complained.....

They asked honest questions and he gave honest answers. Not only that, he gave answers that related to the questions, and usually had facts to back them up.

Who knows whether he--or any other president, particularly the current one--has all those facts as his disposal? Maybe he has aides listening pulling the pertinent numbers up on teleprompters, or feeding them to him through an earpiece. No one knows all those statistics offhand.

But whether he had assistance or not, he answered the question. Without insulting the questioner. Without digressing to insult members of the other party, or talk about completely extraneous subjects. Without claiming that his action (which might not even have been a positive action) was the greatest or biggest thing that had ever happened.

You may think that my being satisfied with honesty and human decency is too low a bar...but I am comparing his answers to the total, complete, absolute lack of honesty and decency in both his predecessor and his successor.

I paid attention when I listened to the press conferences. People might have helped provide details but he knew exactly what he was saying. I am in my seventies myself and I would estimate that he is about 20 times as competent as the current president, and numerous psychiatrists weighing in seem to agree.
When Tapper writes an encyclopedic expose of the really incompetent president he will regain my respect.
