On Juneteenth, Trump says the US has 'too many' holidays

"Too many non-working holidays in America," Trump wrote on Truth Social late Thursday. "It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed."

The president said that the frequency of holidays "must change" and that workers didn't want them.

"The workers don't want it either!" he continued. "Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Earlier on Thursday, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said at a press briefing that the White House was open. When asked by a journalist about commemorating Juneteenth, she said she was "not tracking" Trump's signature on any proclamations for the holiday.

Trump himself supported making Juneteenth a federal holiday in the wake of widespread protests following the killing of George Floyd. "Make Juneteenth a National Holiday" was included among his "Promise to Black America over 4 years" policy proposals in his 2020 presidential campaign.

The White House didn't publish a statement on its website commemorating Juneteenth this year.

Juneteenth holiday promise served Trumps interest as an outreach item for the black vote. That purpose was served. Its not longer needed.

He says there are "too many non-working holidays" and that it "must change". That he makes this statement on Juneteenth clearly implies that he thinks Juneteenth is at least part of the problem, if not a primary example of it.

What do you think this means other than him thinking that Juneteenth should be eliminated as a federal holiday? Do you think he'd be in favor of bumping one of the other federal holidays instead? What about Columbus Day, which is the arguably the least warranted of the federal holidays?

In my state, as well as probably in most of the rest of the USA, it was only government employees, banks, and the USPA whom had Juneteenth as a paid holiday. Most other employees had to work as usual.

A lot of private employers around here offer it. My wife's does. My last job had it as a full holiday. My current job used to then switched it to an extra floating holiday.
