Israel is directly attacking its biggest and bestarmed adversary, without clear backing from the U.S. President Trump publicly opposed an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear sites on Thursday, saying he still believed a nuclear deal was possible.

It's not clear whether Israel has ordered strikes on Iran's nuclear program, or whether the U.S. opposed this specific operation. But the Israeli strikes could be the start of a military conflict that poses grave danger to both Israel and Iran.

Sirens sounded across Israel on Thursday night. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a special state of emergency across the entire country.

"Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the state of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future," Katz said.

Oh snap... things are getting spicy

I suspect there will be retaliation...

It just got confirmed that a leader from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was killed in the strike.

To be fair... Iran has been given several "off-ramps" and declined to take them, at a certain point, it's on them.

(unconfirmed at this point, Iran had plans to try to overwhelm Iron Dome in under two weeks...but still reading up to see if that claim is credible or not)

Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was killed in the Israeli strikes, its state media arm, Tasnim, reported.

Salami was at the IRGC headquarters in Tehran and killed in the attack on the building.

Iranian state media also reported that the Israeli strikes also killed Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, a top official within the IRGC; Fereydoon Abbasi, a nuclear scientist and former Atomic Energy chief; and Dr Mohammed Mehdi Tehranchi, a nuclear scientist.

Things are indeed getting spicy. However undeterred Iran is on their nuclear ambitions, pre-emptively striking them is something I don't agree on. Should Iran declare full on war they will be justified in doing so. Israel handed them the casus belie. No sovereign nation should have their borders violated; no matter how unfriendly they are towards you.

I doubt Iran will go for a hot war with them being outclassed militarily and economically hobbled. Yet if Israel keeps up this pre-emptive strike doctrine, one day they will get themselves destroyed. One day they will slowly lose whatever friends they have left in the world. As it is they have few to begin with. Their enemies will gather strength and support as the world steadily grows tired of aggression.

There are other methods to go about Iran's nuclear ambitions, Israel chose the worst one for long term stability and safety. Whatever safety they achieved for the moment, will only resolves the Iranians to double down and improve. Israel is caught in the cycle of "whack-a-mole" until one side is destroyed.

Look I don't like Iran yet I can't find it in me to tacitly approve of what Israel did. The world could use a little - a lot more calm and peace. More brain than brawn for now.

US oil prices spike 8%, on track for biggest gain in at least 3 years

US oil prices extended sharp gains Thursday night as Israel carries out strikes on Iran targeting the country’s nuclear sites and military.

As of 9:18 pm ET, oil was up by 8.3% to $73.75 a barrel.

That leaves crude on track for its biggest one-day percentage increase since March 2022 during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Israel is at war, with an enemy (much financed by Iran) that violated their sovereign borders and committed sick and heinous acts against innocent civilians. In addition, in October of 2024 Iran launched waves of ballistic missiles at Israel. Israel and the U.S. have given Iran every opportunity to stop their quest for atomic bombs. On Thursday even the United Nations got involved, with their board of governors putting out a statement that Iran is not complying with its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years! Iran quickly responded, thumbing their nose at the United Nations, pronouncing they will establish a new nuclear enrichment facility. Without intervention Iran likely would have used atomic bombs on Israel and possibly the United States before the end of the year..

I was praying and hoping that Israel would have given the USA more time to reach a diplomatic solution with Iran in order to hopefully have a peaceful resolution to Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Wars are no longer officially "declared" at this point in history. They just sort of naturally develop from small scale conflicts into full blown wars.

This is now one of those "naturally developed" wars.

I don't disagree with you on an overall perspective on Israel relations with their neighbours. That said, Israel as of late has been on a disproportionate response to limited attacks. Yes the attacks on them are very visceral, disgusting and revolting on the human level. Even as I recall them it boils my blood. Yet on the global level it is not as severe in comparison to the retaliations Israel carried out. There is a equilibrium to people's empathy no matter who was the initial victim. Unfortunately Israel for their part didn't endear themselves. It is hard to witness entire city blocks flatten with scores of dead and displaced then logically justify with the kidnapping and killing of the few - in relative terms. Not to say that Israel is in total fault.

With respect to Iran's nuclear facilities, this is not the first of such Israeli attack. Israel has been doing this on and off as each facilities pop up. Just that last time they were less obvious with them. Regardless that is not something a nation should be pursuing for long term regional peace. Also no matter how adversarial Iran is with Israel and the US, they are not ignorant of the outcome. Any use of nuclear weapons will not only destroy their enemies but also the users. With Israel in so close proximity to Iran, the resultant fallout will also affect them. Not just Iran but all regional neighbours and the other nations around the globe.

Iran may not be ignorant of the outcome, but don't for a minute think they would hesitate to use the atomic bomb against Israel. Iran has been told by the United States and Israel that they will not be allowed to have an atomic weapon, they knew their nuclear facilities would be attacked, yet they did it anyways.

Iran's statement in response to Thursday's United Nations pronouncement meant there was no chance a diplomatic solution could be reached before Iran had the atomic bombs.

My late mother was extremely interested in politics and watched the news more than anything else. She was not a Christian and we had opposing views on politics so we avoided discussing that. I watch the news so that I know what to pray about.

A statement from IDF Spokesperson BG Effie Defrin on the preemptive Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear targets

Question: wasn’t the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor a “preemptive strike”?

At this point this administration has failed to materialize any form of peace in any of the current war zones as a matter of fact, all are way worse and now we are beginning to see war on our own streets.
Maybe that's the plan.....crude oil is way up.

Regrettably, the US has not been reliable in its foreign policy in the current administration. It's actions regarding Ukraine may be why Israel doesn't care what the US has to say.

Actually, Russia being preoccupied in Ukraine opened the perfect window, at the perfect time, considering Iran's greatest ally has their hands tied at the moment with their own selfish and disruptive tactics.

...This ultimately seems to have little to do with the US and Trump, and everything to do with the current global environment as a whole.

The opportunity seems almost too coincidental... Almost more like fate, in preventing a second Holocaust.
