Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared

The rate of sepsis shot up more than 50% for women hospitalized when they lost their pregnancies in the second trimester, ProPublica found.

ProPublica previously reported on two such cases in which miscarrying women in Texas died of sepsis after doctors delayed evacuating their uteruses. Doing so would have been considered an abortion.

The new reporting shows that, after the state banned abortion, dozens more pregnant and postpartum women died in Texas hospitals than had in pre-pandemic years, which ProPublica used as a baseline to avoid COVID-19-related distortions. As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, ProPublica found, it rose substantially in Texas.

So EMTALA does require emergency departments must treat emergency situations. But...

The Biden Administration asserts that EMTALA means they are legally required to treat emergencies, and that this supercedes any state abortion bans. However, the current state of the court fight is that Texas has won. So Texas emergency rooms do NOT have to treat emergencies unless it meets the medically vague requirements of the Texas abortion law.

Trump administration rescinds Biden-era guidance requiring hospitals to perform emergency abortions

In July 2022, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued guidancethat, under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), doctors must perform abortions in emergency departments -- even in states where the procedure is illegal -- particularly if it serves as a "stabilizing medical treatment" for an emergency medical condition.

Emergency medical conditions included, but were not limited to, "ectopic pregnancy, complications of pregnancy loss, or emergent hypertensive disorders, such as preeclampsia with severe features."

Not just for Texas any more.

I live in CA, so that law doesn't matter. At least not yet. But is it surprising, that Trump doesn't care about women. Women can always replace a woman with a younger one. If they die, while giving birth .

It is pretty clear what was meant: Women can always be replaced by younger models should they die giving birth. But I appreciate the pedantry which warms the cockles of my twisted heart.

Speaking as a man who has been single and looking for a woman, I'd disagree.

Sure, there are men in the upper 10% (or smaller) who are highly desirable to 80% of women, but the rest of us normal slobs are lucky to get what we've got. And those of us who got lucky aren't so cavalier that we don't care about losing them.

I'm giving a hard side-eye to someone who thinks the average man's attitude about his wife is, "Well, shucks, I'll just get another."

Whoa, there.

I think we can separate the position of a state or federal government, that does indeed seem intent on pushing things toward 'The womb is the most important part of a woman, and its contents may take precedence over the woman herself.'

and the position of the average (non-pathological/ultrazealous/sociopathic) man, that RDKirk is correctly representing, who loves his partner and doesn't want her to die.

I've been married over 40 years. Meeting my wife was either God-ordained or wildly serendipitous. I frequently recount to myself how incredibly long the odds were that someone like her and someone like me, with individual uniquenesses that fit like a key in its lock, could have met.

I knew I'd hit the jackpot when I married her. Why would I ever think she'd be easy to replace?

What kind of being are you to believe the average man is so cavalier about the woman he found to marry?

Would you be in favor of making a woman carry an unviable pregnancy to term at risk to her life or health? If not, you're not the droid we're looking for.

Few men think that their wife will be the one to be seriously endangered by pregnancy, so the danger to women in general doesn't strike some as dire or troublesome - while their own wife (sister, daughter, etc.) is precious, other people's womenfolk are more fungible.

I'm giving a hard side-eye to someone who thinks the average man's attitude about his wife is, "Well, shucks, I'll just get another."
While some might say that it's the hit dog that yelps, I really didn't get the idea that anyone was attributing that attitude to you, but I also don't think that they were saying that men are cavalier about their own wife's life, obviously, there are enough who don't prioritize a grown woman over a fetus that these laws are on the books.

They are not.

They are in the process of making money.
That is the problem with our capitalistic society. And I pray that will change to something better soon. Every man for himself is such an evil thought process.

You seem to forget that half the voters are women.

And you seem to forget that more than half of white women voted for Trump.

Yes, @BCP1928 did, indeed, attribute that attitude to me.

No, I am well aware of this. :sigh:

I believe it was this part of your post that triggered the remark: "Sure, there are men in the upper 10% (or smaller) who are highly desirable to 80% of women,..."

Good luck in your search - I hope you find a good, compatible woman who will cherish you in return.

I regret someone was triggered by a documented statistical fact.

Let's see the document. But that's why I asked the question. because your statement alone is not enough--one would have to know why you think women are more attracted to some men rather than others.
