"In his name" is an idiom.

It refers to the command that Jesus gave to his apostles in Matthew 28:18-20. Baptism is what Jesus states will make people his disciples. The Father and the Holy Spirit must also be invoked in order to become born of water and Spirit.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.
Upon submitting to God's water baptism command, as revealed by His apostles, individuals receive the family name. (Eph 3:15)
"To bear God's name is to belong to God as His special people (Num 6:27; Isa 43:7; 44:5; Rom 9:25-26). Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary,

Note: The Apostle Paul knew water baptism was to be in Jesus’ name. He instructed the born again Corinthians concerning this truth:

"Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name." (1 Cor 1:13-14)

Matthew 28:19 states to Baptize in THE NAME OF... And that name is Jesus, as consistently revealed in the detailed accounts of water baptism.
(Acts 2:4-41, 8:12-18, 9:17-18, 10:43-48, 19:1-7, 22:16)

The usage of the phrase, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost" in administering water baptism is found no where in scripture. The usage of the phrase was instituted at the Nicene Counsil in 325AD by forerunners of the Roman Catholic Church. This is well documented in encyclopedias, etc. Sadly, many have no idea they are not obeying God but rather a counterfeit manmade tradition.

The spiritual reality of being buried with Jesus requires obedience to God's command as initally revealed by the Apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost: "Repent, and be baptized EVERYONE of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin..." And, afterward by others. Jesus prophesied concerning this truth. "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, BEGINNING at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:47)

Keep in mind, mockers are not exempt. They too will give an account of every idle word they've spoken. (Matt. 12:35-37)

God really pours out the wrath for people who take themselves too seriously.

As a previous recipient, it's just a warning out of loving concern.

God bless.

And, afterward by others. Jesus prophesied concerning this truth. "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, BEGINNING at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:47)
In order to be saved and thereby become a disciple of Jesus, he commands:

Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” John 3:5

The Nicene Council codified in writing the beliefs and practices of Jesus' early church. Jesus founded his church, the Catholic Church, upon Peter.

Matthew 16:18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

"Scripture alone" is not sufficient to know all that Jesus taught and did. Scripture is a supplement to the apostles' and disciples' oral preaching tradition which has been handed down for 2000 years.

2 Timothy 2:2 And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.

John 21:25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

What is the name? The Acts of the apostles reveals and confirms over and over the name Jesus was referencing. (Acts 2:4-41, 8:12-18, 9:17-18, 10:43-48, 19:1-7, 22:16)

The idea Scripture alone is not sufficient is directly contradicted by the written word itself. Looking for answers elsewhere and/or relying upon things that contradict the biblical record is not wise. Everyone is going to be judged by what is revealed within it's pages. Jesus made this clear, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." John 12:48

Paul's comments in 2 Timothy, and 2 Thessalonias, pertain to teachings and traditions established by the apostles. Jesus condemned those who distorted what God set in place. In fact, Jesus expressed that manmade traditions make God's word of none effect. (Mark 7:13) Consider what that means concerning water baptism. The word reveals the spiritual reality of being buried with Jesus into His death occurs upon obedience to God's command of water baptism. (Romans 6:3-6) We are to be baptized in the name of Jesus since it was He who was crucified for all.

Jesus made this clear, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." John 12:48

Scripture alone is not sufficient. Some of the word of God was written down, such as in John 12:48, but definitely not all of the word of God.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

Colossians 1:21-23 And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of evil deeds 22 he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable before him, 23 provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister.

John 21:25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

Jesus established a church and he appointed its leaders. He commanded that we listen to the leaders of his church. Jesus never commanded anyone to read the NT Bible. It did not even exist in its present form until hundreds of years later.

Matthew 18:17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.

Consider what that means concerning water baptism. The word reveals the spiritual reality of being buried with Jesus into His death occurs upon obedience to God's command of water baptism. (Romans 6:3-6) We are to be baptized in the name of Jesus since it was He who was crucified for all.
You do not understand the command of Jesus on how to baptize in his name, even though it is actually written down. Jesus, his Father, and the Holy Spirit, all three, must be invoked in order to have a valid baptism.

And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

There were two types of water baptism during the time of the apostles. There was the baptism of John and the baptism of Jesus.

The baptism of John was a water baptism denoting a person's repentance for his sins. John's baptism prepared people for Jesus' water baptism, which actually washed away a person's sins and thereby made him righteous. Jesus commanded that his baptism invoke all three persons of the Holy Trinity. We must obey Jesus' command.

The Catholic Church teaches these oral traditions. For example, they teach that their Eucharist (Holy Communion) is truly the literal Body and Blood of Jesus Christ present under the appearances of bread and wine. The ordained priests have received the power from Jesus Christ (their High Priest) to call upon the Holy Spirit for him to change the bread and wine into the precious Body and Blood of Jesus Christ at every Mass.

John 6:48-57
I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; 50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.

52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54 Whoever eats[a] my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”.....66 As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

An example concerning baptism from the Didache, a very early church writing:

Chapter 7. Concerning Baptism

And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 in living water. But if you have not living water, baptize into other water; and if you can not in cold, in warm. But if you have not either, pour out water thrice upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. CHURCH FATHERS: The Didache

The "dogma" of scripture alone is not biblical. It is a "manmade" tradition!

Jesus Christ founded his church and he appointed its leaders to preach/teach his gospel throughout the whole world. Jesus never commanded his church's leaders to write a Bible. He did command his followers to obey his church's leaders. (Matthew 18:15-18, Matthew 28:18-20, Luke 10:16)

Scripture does make the claim that Scripture is a useful tool for his church's leaders to use to help teach (explain} the faith.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 3:15-16 And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you, 16 speaking of these things as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.

Many scholars are skeptical regarding the origins of the Didache. And it is not inspired. The document includes information that contradicts the bible's contents. As mentioned water baptism was consistly administered in the name of Jesus until forerunners of the Roman Catholic Church mandated it's change. RCC documents confirm this truth. As do many church history sources.

The scripture actually says the bible includes all that is necessary for one to be THROUGHLY FURNISHED unto all good works. Meaning nothing beside it is necessary for instruction in righteousness. And according to Jesus all will be judged by the word; meaning the inspired word of God.

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Tim 3:16-17

"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." John 12:48

The final words of the bible give a profound warning to those who would add or take away from the prophecy of the bible:
"I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things,
God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy,
God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." Rev 22:18-19

The ORAL traditions of the church were taught to the Apostles by Jesus Christ. Their successors passed these oral traditions down throughout the ages to our own present age. How to correctly baptize is one of these oral traditions.

Paul is talking about the letters and/or oral statements of the apostles. He certainly does not mean we are to believe traditions begun years later contradict Jesus' as well as His apostles teachings.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.
