  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson refused to identify as a Christian during a recent debate with an atheist who pressed the former about whether Catholics worship Mary, an exchange that has since gone viral.

Peterson appeared in a Sunday episodeof Jubilee Media's series "Surrounded." In the episode, the psychologist sat in the middle of a circle as a group of about 20 atheists took turns debating him one-on-one.

Almost an hour into the episode, an atheist named Danny stepped up to challenge Peterson on his definition of worship and understanding of Catholicism. Danny asked the psychologist whether Christian denominations like the Catholic Church worship Mary. Peterson replied that Mary is "quite a ways up the hierarchy, but not at the top."

The question of "Being" or "Existence" is a semantic (*) rabbit hole in my opinion. God is Being itself but He also exists. As far as I'm concerned either term suffices for general conversation.

{(*) PS - I added "semantic" (rabbit hole) later. I was trying to think of the term all afternoon and it finally came to mind long after I'd posted this item.}

Theologians and Philosophers might disagree as they have distinct differences between terms. If I'm thinking of an "accident" for example I don't mean the same thing a philosopher might.

Aristotle made a distinction between the essential and accidental properties of a thing. For example, a chair can be made of wood or metal, but this is accidental to its being a chair: that is, it is still a chair regardless of the material from which it is made.[3] To put this in technical terms, an accident is a property which has no necessary connection to the essence of the thing being described.[4][5][6]
As for Jordan Peterson, I think he'll become Christian if he isn't already and if his wife is Catholic. Since she claimed miraculous healing due to prayer, I suspect he'll also become Catholic.

He reminds me of a bloke called Fred Hollows, who was an atheist but married to a Catholic, Gabi Hollows. They both did or do a lot of work assisting people in third world countries to help with their eyesight. I don't know if Fred Hollows changed his mind, but his funeral rites took place in a Catholic Church. Although he as an atheist, his funeral took place in a Catholic Church, probably because of his wife.

Hollows was given a state funeral service at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, though he was an atheist.[19] In accordance with his wishes, he was interred in Bourke, where he had worked in the early 1970s.[20] He was survived by his wife Gabi Hollows (an Australian Living Treasure), and children Tanya, Ben, Cam, Emma, Anna-Louise, Ruth and Rosa.

In the case of someone like Fred Hollows, I wonder how God would judge him. As an atheist he was probably more Christian in his behaviour than a lot of Christians.

I believe I heard Peterson answer to the question that he did not declare his
believes because he only wants people to hear what he has to say rather than
put a label on him.
