  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Found another old book today… First Year Latin

An amusing thing written on the first page by the previous owner studying the language…

Latin is a language
At least it used to be
It killed off all the Romans
And now its killing me

All are dead who ever spoke it
All are dead who ever wrote it
All will die who try to learn it
Blessed death they surely earn it.

Reminds me of two latin jokes I looked up - I'm doing Latin via the U3A (University of the Third Age) with it's endless declensions and conjugations.

Cicero was giving a speech in the Senate. One bloke got there about 15 minutes late. He sat down and said to the senator next to him "What's he been saying?"

The senator replied "I don't know. He hasn't got to the verb yet!"

****************************************************

The other one -

Q. What happens to Latin teachers when they lose their jobs?

A. They decline.

**************************************************

And the third - A centurion bustles into a restaurant and holds up one finger from each hand across the other - "Table for ten please!"

Random tangent:

There’s a book in my house about dogs that is to (my dad’s first name) dated 1924. My dad wasn’t born until 30 years later, considering those side of my (deceased) grandparents were born in 1915 and 1916! Lol

I have a real addiction to old books depending on the subject.

Pretty much the only books I keep anymore are my antique books and Bibles. The current ones I read and usually donate.
I probably have close to 1,000 or so. Haven’t read many of them. Ope!

Why have you not read many of them?
I just keep buying them. I need to really get down and start reading them- if that makes sense! I have hoarding tendencies ;) not good, I know

I learned the hard way not to hoard every book. At one time I had so many I could fill a truck. It became oppressive. So if it new and read, I donate. The antiques I keep.

I’m probably the same way! I just need to carve out more time for reading! :)

Yeah sometimes it’s hard to relax and read. My mind can really be in multitasking mode at times where it hard to concentrate which does not make reading very satisfying.
