The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with. Their powerful Trade Barriers, Vat Taxes, ridiculous Corporate Penalties, Non-Monetary Trade Barriers, Monetary Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against Americans Companies, and more, have led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable. Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025. There is no Tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

A band-aid for our failed manufacturing sector. And it's a smart move, politically, even though it will raise domestic prices. Allowing European manufacturers here will keep the jobs up--European automobile companies are already making cars here to export to Europe even though American companies don't seem to be able to.

IOW, Trump won't negotiate like an adult, so he threatens another unsustainable tariff to start in 9 days. Once again, his abrupt actions complicate business planning and logistics operations.

It is a ridiculous tariff. Higher than China currently. 50% is basically an embargo. Very little in the EU has that kind of competitive advantage. Most believe Trump is just posturing, so the likely deal might be around 20% which is still quite high. It will not keep jobs here anyway because the exports of the USA will drop significantly too. No one is going to relocate plants based on Trump's tariffs because he will be gone in 3.5 years and the midterms usually swing to the opposite party. The courts are involved in potentially cutting Trump's trade powers too.

Businesses in the know planned for this during the fourth quarter. It wasn’t covered by the media because the strike had the headlines. ;-)

It’s more likely to impact consumers and inspire some to spend (like yours truly) to get ahead. I don’t think it will be 50% in the long run. But a little savings is better than none.

Glad you can afford EU products. Other than some cheese or candy the only thing I can recall I bought in the last ten years from the EU knowingly was some floor tiles from Portugal. I do prefer Airbus over Boeing at the moment though.

Businesses can only front-load their inventories so much before they have to re-stock.

On the personal spending side, we moved up a car purchase (not European) due to the tarriffs.

Listening to American CEOs talking about the uncertainty that Trump is generating is hardly a ringing endorsement of his policies. Many have already stocked up on crucial parts and workflows that might be interrupted by his negotiating tactics. Business wants a resolution for this. Companies like Volkswagen have concluded a good way to do this is to make their cars in the USA.
The deficit is there because America is not competing in the global marketplace, especially against top manufacturers like the Germans or Chinese. This will not be solved by tariffs but rather by long-term investments in infrastructure, education, training, and apprenticeship schemes as well as wise and coordinated state investments in crucial sectors. Trump is thinking in months but he needs a ten-year plan for this.

I find it hard to believe Trump wrote that.

I find it hard to believe Trump.

I should clarify: he may well carry out his threats - who knows? It's not his threats I doubt but his rhetoric which is fanciful and often factually wrong. This used to be called lying.

Imagine how long he would last as a UK politician? Then a gain we voted in that buffoon Johnson in. I guess people want to hear what they already believe.

Agree. There's nothing in ALL CAPS and it contains complete sentences. That (pretty much) excludes Donnie from being the author.

Actually, I wonder what, if anything, Trump has actually written in the past twenty or so years. One would think that with his wealth he, at least, could afford better writers.

But the Conservative Party did get rid of him for fear he might loose them the next election. Finding someone even less electable (anyone remeber who she was?) rather ended their chances.

I wonder if the Labour Party would have allowed someone like Biden to stand again? Probalby not. But the Conservatives are much more prone to removing Prime Minsters.

And he already walked it back.

What a surprise.
I wish he had a bigger backbone, but it be nice if trump faced enough consequences for these idiotic childish things. He does it just enough to tick everyone off, but rarly enoughg to harm things. Though he may have messed up with China.

yeah, as others pointed out, they can only do so much. take the china tariffs, stores were running out of supplies, and even after he gave up on the tariffs it take a month for new stuff to come in. Trumps playing chicken with a train and expecting it to blink.

Relations with China have always been extremely complex and intricate. Taking a sledgehammer to them certainly does not solve any of the intricacies.
