  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One person killed in explosion outside fertility clinic; police say act was ‘intentional’

An explosion that heavily damaged a fertility clinic Saturday in the upscale California city of Palm Springs was apparently intentional, local authorities said. One person was found dead, and the FBI said it was sending investigators, including bomb technicians, to the scene.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said in a statement that the blast “appears to be an intentional act of violence” and that several buildings were damaged, some severely.

“There has been one fatality, the person’s identity is not known,” Mills said.

The act was being investigated as a possible car explosion, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter who insisted on anonymity to discuss preliminary information from an ongoing investigation. One of the officials told AP that investigators believe the person who died was likely the person who set off the explosion, but they cautioned that the investigation was still in its early stages. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.

This may get interesting. Especially when they find a suspect and a motive.

The dead person was the suspect per internal FBI briefing seen by the Times. FBI has another[?] person of interest.
Four others injured.

FBI Assistant Director for Los Angeles Akil Davis said the agency’s joint terrorism investigators were on the scene. He described the blast as so large as to cause damage several blocks away. An office building two blocks from the blast had its windows blown out, as did a Denny’s five blocks away.

An internal briefing circulated Saturday afternoon by senior officials within the Los Angeles Police Department and viewed by The Times noted that the FBI had confirmed the suspect was the sole fatality. That briefing also said police had found two rifles — an AK-47 and an AR-platform rifle — along with ammunition next to the exploded vehicle.

A law enforcement source provided The Times with a police briefing that identified the suspect as a 25-year-old man from Twentynine Palms.

American Reproductive Centers is “Coachella Valley’s first and only full-service fertility center and IVF lab,” led by board-certified Dr. Maher A. Abdallah, according to its website.

The site says that the clinic has helped more than 2,000 families become parents and highlights its work with LGBTQ+ families.

FBI says 'person of interest' in probe of fatal fertility clinic explosion is Twentynine Palms man

The investigation into a deadly explosion — led by the FBI and deemed "an intentional act of terrorism" — at the site of a Palm Springs fertility clinic Saturday is focused on a "person of interest" identified by the FBI on Sunday as Guy Edward Bartkus, 25, of Twentynine Palms.

--

Patrons of Denny's told Wall a group of elderly women had been eating at the tables directly beneath the windows and were injured by the blast.

"The big glass windows were just shattered," he said. "They came in big pieces and they were still laying there."

Law enforcement has said four people were injured in the explosion, but has not identified them nor provided updates on their conditions.

FBI investigating potential camera and tripod at site of explosion

FBI Assistant Director Akil Davis said the FBI was investigating a tripod that was said to be at the site of the explosion on Saturday.

His comments came in response to a question from a reporter who asked about witnesses reporting a tripod that appeared to be set up for livestreaming the explosion.

pro-mortalist?

"....in some of the alleged writings, Bartkus described himself as a “pro-mortalist” and said he believed people did not give consent to exist.

He described being “pro-mortalist” as being who intends to bring about their own death as soon as possible in order “to prevent your future suffering, and, more importantly, the suffering your existence will cause to all the other sentient beings.”

He also allegedly wrote that his end goal was to begin “sterilizing this planet of the disease of life” on the site.

The FBI has not shared how it determined the explosion was an act of terrorism

My guess is that there was a Tesla in the parking lot that got scratched.

One suspects that blowing himself up was not the intent. I believe the technical term is "too much kaboom."

Alternatively, maybe the guns were a backup plan?

There's some chatter that the perp is an "anti-sex pro-mortalist", which sounds to me like he spent too much time watching online videos designed to radicalize people.
Yep, another ideological poisoning probably. That stuff is addictive.

“Here you can download the recorded stream of my suicide & bombing of an IVF clinic,” the site [suspected, but not proven, to be the bomber's] began, but no such file existed. [I assume the boom came too soon, or he changed plans] The author cites numerous fringe philosophies including

  • Abolitionist veganism: The opposition to all animal use by humans.
  • Negative utilitarianism: The idea that we should act to minimize suffering rather than maximize pleasure in the world.
  • Pro-mortalism: The fringe philosophical position that it is best for sentient beings to die as soon as possible to prevent future suffering.
In the manifesto, the author denounced those who bring human life into the world and declared an end goal of “sterilizing this planet of the disease of life.”

“Basically, it just comes down to I’m angry that I exist and that, you know, nobody got my consent to bring me here,” the speaker said.

On the website with the manifesto and hidden in the site’s underlying code, the author referenced the recent death of a person the writer claimed as a close friend, “Sophie.” The references match the April 20 death of a Washington state womanallegedly shot by her partner at — he says — her request.

A law enforcement bulletin reviewed by The Times said the Palm Springs bombing suspect appeared to become more depressed after the recent death of a female friend.

Brian Levin, the founder of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and professor emeritus at Cal State San Bernardino, said that the author of the manifesto appeared to be part of a growing movement of alienated lone actors radicalized on obscure internet sites and misinformation.

I was scratching my head on that one as well. But the non consent did me in. ;-)

Over the last two decades, Levin said, a string of young male loners, barely into adulthood, have erupted in extreme violence as a result of a mix of social estrangement, unrestrained online radicalization and aggression, as well as unaddressed psychological distress.

Historically, Levin said, it would have been harder for an individual to have an obscure ideology validated and legitimized and gain the knowledge to carry out such an attack.

“Today, we basically have a DIY ecosystem where lone folks can engage in conduct that previously tilted more towards groups and small cells,” Levin said. “There’s a whole cauldron that involves radicalization, misinformation, legitimization of violence as a method within this grievance set and that’s what you have.”

I was thinking along those lines as I read the isms. Whatever happened to being vegetarian or vegan and leaving it there? Why must every idea become a movement? And why must the public pay the price for their disgruntlement? The first thing I thought when I heard it was an IVF clinic was about the eggs. Are they safe or were they destroyed? When you contemplate the lives he could have impacted negatively and what they might have been deprived of the act is grievous. If he wasn’t dead he would have been sued rightfully so. We need legislation to discourage further acts with financial penalties included.

Palm Springs bombing suspect appears to have posted bomb tests on YouTube

A snapshot of a YouTube channel, titled "Indict Evolution," was saved to an online archive before the channel was taken off the platform.

The archive contains videos dating back at least six years and pointing to an interest in experimenting with homemade explosives and chemicals.

On May 5, a post on that [separate messageboard] account mentioned a failed suicide attempt involving drugs and a homemade explosive device.

On Thursday, that account posted again, detailing disturbing plans for a death by carbon monoxide poisoning. In a follow-up post, the user referred to "some extra drama that I probably shouldn't say haha."

FWIW, I see some stuff in the fediverse that's likely him. Not that many posts and nothing extreme, but definitely devoted to "EFIL-ism" - that's LIFE spelled backwards!
