  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm not sure what it would do. The only markets controlled by the federal government are the VA and possibly Indian Health Service?
Medicare members' plans are through Advantage plans (or as I call them , disadvantage plans) or through stand-alone drug plans for those who keep traditional Medicare with a supplement.
Medicaid is operated by states who get varying support with federal subsidies.
Everything else is private insurance companies.
Since it would decimate the companies' profit margins, their stock prices would plummet. There would be mass layoffs. That would affect production levels and there would be huge shortages.
On the other hand, pharmacy companies rip Americans off.
What can be done?
We can go to generics a lot faster. I read several years ago that patents last about seven years...and so to keep their monopolies, drug companies change inert ingredients, or make things time-released, or other nonsense.
So grant drug patents for five years and then let them go generic--an open market with lots of competition.
No patents extensions ever. This would let the open market accomplish lower prices quickly.
And no more drug ads on TV, etc. Same rules as for nicotine.

It's a start. I hope President Trump will work to get his order passed into law.
It's a canard already responded to by the party who tries to make sure drug prices are not eased.
(Senate Majority Leader John Thune) said Monday that Trump’s executive order would be “fairly controversial” if put into legislation on Capitol Hill, reflecting his party’s longtime skepticism of using Medicare’s huge buying power to pressure drug companies to lower prices.
“My assumption is that would be fairly controversial up here if we were doing it … legislatively,” Thune said of Trump’s executive order on drug pricing.

The GOP has literally brought up legislation to keep medicare from using it's buying power to lower prices.

It will be fun to see the responses by members of this forum when Republicans vote against it.
There will be no bill.
Trump has used withholding money for universities and agencies appropriated by congress, and the GOP controlled congress doesn't say a word.
It will be interesting if Trump did the same with money slated for pharmaceutical companies and see the reaction from the GOP.
Would that be a bridge to far for them?
We'll never know because this EO will won't do a thing, there will be no bill to vote on, and Trump won't follow up on it as he did with the universities.
