  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't believe so.

*correction*
Yes, you are correct... It applies to individuals making over $259,829... For those individuals, 53% goes to taxes.
The Canadian federal marginal tax rate for earnings of over $253,414 is 33%.

How state taxes affect that...maybe our Canadian friends can clarify.

Ah, I use Nikon DSLR's. It's an expensive hobby.
As someone who dabbles quite a bit in that hobby, the glass is the aspect that will empty out the wallet faster than the camera bodies lol.

Between the camera bodies I have (I have a older Nikon D5200, a Canon that's also a crop sensor, and then a Sony full frame mirrorless), I probably have 5 times that amount tied up in lenses lol.

Interesting. Can you show us how you got there? Whether it's a hypothetical or someone you know, show how you came up with that and give us the Province you're demonstrating it with please.

All mine are crop sensor. If I am doing "full frame" it's film. Bodies are F4 (film), D200, D300, D7000 (x2), and D500. Most expensive glass 400mm f 2.8. Most used glass 200mm f 2.8. Most used every day carry "street lense" 16-35 f 4. Absolutely coolest lense, manual focus 50mm f 1.2.

For reference, I did a quick and dirty basic calculation for Vancouver, B.C. for an individual income of exactly $300,000
My math came out to a total of B.C. Province taxes owed as $38,576.22. Federal Taxes came out to $71,160.11
Grand total of $109,736.33 which comes out to a combined percentage of 36.58%. Nowhere near your claimed 53%

That's assuming no deductions whatsoever which is likely incredibly rare if not non-occurring for those making 300k a year.

Ah, but that's the fake plastic money that is used in Canada. That's only about 30 bucks in real money.

If true, it could be a selling point for that 51st Star!

Your taxes will go down as you joyfully discover the realities of a healthcare system still run on your ability to pay!

It sells itself!

Well, I learned something new today.

I learned what a marginal tax is.
This is why I unfortunately can't take the complaints of so many American conservatives seriously when they complain about how high someone's (especially Nordics) taxes are, even when told the tax rates are progressive.

Hmmm... What should people trust more? Your math skills, or an AI supercomputer?

...No offense to you, I'm sure you're good, but I'm going to lean towards the supercomputer.. Others may choose differently

You definitely should not trust AI unconditionally. We've had discussions on these forums where people have posted answers by AI that have been blatantly false before, or out of date. There's a reason why hallucinations are an issue with AI.

It's showing you that because the top rate for Federal is 33%, and the top rate for B.C. is 20.5%. Added together that does indeed come to 53.5%
If the taxes were simply "Person X made $300k therefore B.C. gets 20.5% of that number, and Canada Federal gets 33% of that number" then you'd be correct. But they are not that simple. It's a progressive system. As you just stated you learned. Show us you learned. The tables are easy to find, just as I did, and do some easy math to figure it out. Show your work first and I'll show mine. Not some AI slop that's giving you half the picture.

EDIT: For added luls if you punch in "How much would a Canadian living B.C. pay in taxes if they earned $300,000?" gives you an AI amount of an estimated $122,000 owed, a net take home of 178,000, for an average rate of 40.2%. Still not 53%.

When you use a tool incorrectly it will give you incorrect results. Or maybe it won't, but you wouldn't know how to tell the difference. Good way to get wrong answers or scammed.

So is it impossible that someone pays 53% taxes in Vancouver? I'm just saying, I think it can happen.

...And that's what the AI was pointing out - that it 'can' be that high.
