  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maga says Pope Leo may be American, but he's not 'America first'

Catholicism has rarely been more prominent in US politics as the Trump administration openly embraces advisers and officials who proudly say faith has shaped their politics.

But any jubilation on the American Make America Great Again right about the new Pope this week quickly dissipated as key voices from Donald Trump's Maga movement came to a disappointed conclusion: the first American Pope does not appear to be "America first".
Little is known about the political leanings of Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago.

He has voiced concerns for the poor and immigrants, chosen a name that may reference more liberal church leadership, and he appears to have both supported the liberal-leaning Pope Francis and criticised the US president's policies on social media.

Weird world we live in, where being concerned about the poor, immigrants, et cetera is considered liberal.

the first American Pope does not appear to be "America first"
That is why he may be a good Pope. He needs to be a man of the world.
I have always though that "America first" is just the plural of "Me First".
And far too nationalistic.

Yet, we do have a right and responsibility to protect out national integrity. I think Pope Leo XIV knows that and will respond to contemporary situations with thoughtful, well spoken words. In the global Catholic Church America is not first. In fact, there are some countries that will need far more attention. Germany, for example. At least it seems to me.

I thought the first address was wonderful. Some in MAGA world disturbed that he did not use English at all. The thought never occurred to me.

In his most recent Meeting with the College of Cardinals, 10.05.2025 he shows us a few of his intentions.

"In this regard, I would like us to renew together today our complete commitment to the path that the universal Church has now followed for decades in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. Pope Francis masterfully and concretely set it forth in the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, from which I would like to highlight several fundamental points:
  1. the return to the primacy of Christ in proclamation (cf. No. 11);
  2. the missionary conversion of the entire Christian community (cf. No. 9);
  3. growth in collegiality and synodality (cf. No. 33);
  4. attention to the sensus fidei (cf. Nos. 119-120), especially in its most authentic and inclusive forms, such as popular piety (cf. No. 123);
  5. loving care for the least and the rejected (cf. No. 53);
  6. courageous and trusting dialogue with the contemporary world in its various components and realities (cf. No. 84;
  7. Second Vatican Council, Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, 1-2).

MAGA being disturbed does not bother me. He spoke Italian and he thanked his previous parish in Spanish. I thought it was a wonderful greeting for a new pope I understand legitimate concern but whether someone leans left or right, you must be fair in your assessments and give credit when it is due. I have no respect for people that hate everything across the board simply because they have a hatred for the one that does it. You can see it daily here and elsewhere. That is why people are so divided. They are too busy nurturing hatred instead of looking at each individual issue without bias. They are what they hate. The MAGA base? Seriously who cares? Let them hate. The Trump haters? Who cares? Let them throw the baby out with the bath water. The rest of us should pick up the slack where common sense and fairness is lacking. Enough of us do it, it might mean something.

Kinda silly for the Pope, who is now the head of the Catholic church to be "America First," IMO.

An international figure like the Pope shouldn't be putting the needs of one nation above other nations. My .02.

Yup, see Matthew 25. We must be concerned about the less fortunate. Jesus said so.

I agree. God loves the sojourner as we are sojourners and exiles in the world as well. But there needs to be a balance with these things IMO. I think completely open borders is a mistake. I also think the way Trump is handling immigration is not the right approach either. So I am kinda in the middle on this issue. Of course, the Pope, I am sure, has his reason for his position as well.

At the risk of being pedantic, I'd say the Pope needs to be a man of God not of the world. But your broader point I agree with.

Regarding the OP, the media seems to be trying to engineer this false dichotomy that MAGA is against the Pope but from what I've seen conservatives, trads, MAGA are all more or less expressing the same sentiment about Leo which is: he seems great so far, we're cautiously optimistic, and let's withhold any significant judgment until he takes an appropriately significant action like publishing an encyclical or motu proprio.
