  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

High-ranking heads of state and Catholic bishops in China have remained notably silent following the death of Pope Francis, while reactions from political and religious leaders across the globe have poured out on social media within hours of the pope’s passing on Monday morning.

AsiaNews reported on Tuesday that Chinese officials are not permitted to express themselves publicly on Pope Francis’ death due the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s control over the Church there.

The Chinese government offered a brief statement nearly 24 hours after the Holy Father’s passing, only after reporters asked foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun about it on Tuesday.

“China expresses its condolences for the death of Pope Francis,” he said, adding that “in recent years, China and the Vatican have maintained constructive contacts and engaged in useful exchanges. China is ready to work with the Vatican to promote the continuous improvement of China-Vatican relations.”

I don’t know.. did the government Catholic Church have the Pope to lead.
Years ago they were the leaders..?

The Church under the Pope is hidden?
Or are they allowed now?

I’m confused

The Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association leads the Church in China unless you go underground.

You’ve got the CPA run by the Communist Party and up to recently you had the underground Church accepting the pope. They got thrown under the bus. Some underground bishops are rotting in prison. Some may still be functioning in hiding.

Mr. McCarrick, that former cardinal guy, now dead, helped negotiate a deal between the Vatican and China. It was a secret deal, and we still don’t know its secrets although it has been renewed. Maybe after pope Francis is buried the secrets will come out. All we do know is the underground Church was thrown under the bus to get the deal and what passes for religious freedom in China isn’t much.

Officially the Chinese Patriotic Association IS the Catholic Church in China. According to China. According to the Vatican. The underground Catholics have been thrown under the bus for the Sino-Vatican deal. I don't know if the undergrounders are technically in schism now but they don't get the time of day from the Vatican.

There is no longer a formal schism. But I do not understand how.
Thanks for the reply!
