That country is in an emergency - so these immediate actions make perfect sense. It's a long standing practice among many countries to have borders and actively police them. People without a valid passport of visa or refused at any airport or border in the world (except for when they apply for asylum, that's a different category); for decades the USA have deported people with expired or non-existent visas. But in the past years the situation at the Mexican border completely spun out of control - and the Biden Gov lacked any political will to change that - and even accommodated the flow of illegal migrants to let them land well in the USA. It's hilarious and incomprehensible that some are in favour of passport/visa checks at JFK airport but against a border fence in Texas .. You think countries like India, China, Russia or Australia would allow that? Anyone who overstays his visa gets deported here once detected.Australia is a democracy like the United States, so I hope you will understand. None of these are long-term goals or achievements. President Trump is using executive orders to achieve some of these actions, so on January 20, 2029, if a Democrat is elected to the White House, all of these could be reversed.
If President Trump wants long term solution for of undocumented immigrants coming to the USA, or those who are in USA without legal status , he would need to ask Congress to pass relevant laws. This is the only way to achieve long-term goals. The same principle applies to trade policy and alliances. For any long-term objectives, actions must be taken through Congress rather than by executive order.
