  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

'Deep sense of outrage and betrayal': House Democrats react to Schumer announcement

"I think there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal and this is not just progressive Democrats — this is across the board, the entire party," New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told reporters Thursday night at a party retreat in Leesburg, Va.
"I think it is a huge slap in the face," she said.
NPR has reached out to Schumer's office for further comment.

I believe Fetterman will join Schumer. We will see how the other Democrats react.

He said he was afraid if the government shut down and workers were furloughed Musk wouldn't bring them back.
He doesn't trust Musk, and I agree on that point.

I can see why other Dems would be mad about both his flip-flop and his approving the bill, but I'm inclined to agree with his political calculus. The only better deal that Dems could possibly wring out now is the clean month-long extension that had been tossed around.

Isn't this a short term spending bill?

Yes it's a stopgap measure, bare minimum to keep the government going.

That's not correct. It's a 6-month bill, which, in budgetary terms is, I suppose, more of a medium-term bill. It's half the length of a normal budget.

From what I gather, it also cedes more power to the executive branch to decide how to fund certain things, essentially codifying what DOGE et al are already doing.

Then why the outrage? We've been through many of these before because our government is broken. Democrats are caught between a rock and a hard spot on this issue because if they do shut down the government, Trump is going to rail on them every day, and the democrats and Independents will see this as harmful and might stay on the Republican side.

Instead of tribal warfare, they should be thinking about the American people and not the ideology that anything Republican is bad because they mustn't forget the working class that they lost last year. All I see currently is that they are pandering to the extreme left, and Fox News viewership has increased this term so that the flippers will get an earful.

That's Schumer's argument, too, and I'm inclined to agree.

Hopefully this is a sign for all parties to look at the bigger picture of what is necessary to save our Democracy.

That was the proposal from the Democrats - a 1-month continuation of current funding to allow more time to negotiate a more comprehensive spending bill. As pointed out, what was passed by the House is a 6-month funding bill. It does largely keep funding the same, but it makes some key policy changes. It includes a limit on spending by the city of DC, which effectively cuts their budget by $1.1 billion (the city has already passed its own balanced budget), it gives the President more freedom in deciding how appropriated funds are spent (abrogating some of Congress's power of the purse), and it includes the silly redefinition of the word "day," which allows Trump to use his powers under the National Emergency Act without the statutory checks that are supposed to be provided by Congress.

Basically, it's a further expansion of the Imperial Presidency.

I did appropriately look it up and it funds the government through September with only 2 changes. A 13 Billion dollars increase in defense spending and a smaller cut somewhere else

It's that some Democrats are acting ridiculously. Unless they think last years spending which they voted for and had Biden sign into law is bad, then there's nothing wrong with the bill.

We have to increase the defense spending, we knew that going into office. And we want to keep spending lower where we can.

I'm glad that Democrats supported this, since they would support it if it wasn't Trump in office.

There were cuts in Medicaid and other programs for the poor.

You have it backwards actually, it was a $6 billion boost to defense spending and $13 billion in cuts. I agree, not a huge amount of difference money-wise (though a lot of those cuts were to programs that could not really afford them). Programs with significant cuts include:
  • rental assistance
  • National Emergency Food Program
  • Disaster Relief Fund
  • Corps of Engineers civil works projects
  • rural broadband access programs
  • transportation safety projects
  • nuclear nonproliferation/nuclear terrorism task force
  • merchant fleet construction

The real issues, as I said in my post above, were with the changes to policy that were folded into it. Well, that and the fact that it was negotiated without any input from Democrats. It's perhaps a bit petty, but at the same time, if you need Democratic votes to get the bill through, maybe Democrats should get some say in the bill, hm?

Perhaps the ones who supported it would have, but it's probable that the ones who didn't still wouldn't.

What seems particularly strange about this budget is that while Maga campaigned on "too much debt", instead of paying down the debt with the proposed savings, they want to give more money to the financial elites and plunge the US into more debt. Bizarro world.

He's old enough to retire. Some new faces would be better.
Like Biden - just force him out when he is no longer of use - so very kind and loving.
