  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Should Trump deport permanent residents that claim Jan 6 was an insurrection?

Do you think Trump should deport permanent residents that claim Jan 6 was an insurrection?
Most of us are about ready to leave anyway.
It is no longer a country that respects laws.

No, he should not.... and I have not seen any evidence that would suggest that Trump is even thinking about it.

What exactly is "wrong" with the idea of deporting people for their political beliefs ?
As long as they’re not supporting a terrorist organization and inciting riots there’s no basis for deporting them

I assume you are talking about the whole Mahmoud Khalil situation

Khalil openly supported Hamas and called for violence against Israelis. His organization (CUAD) called for armed resistance against Israel and for Columbia to divest from that country. He engaged in sit-ins, disruptions, tent encampments on campus, etc., in violation of school policy.

Now whether or not he deserves to be deported is a tricky issue --I would say probably not

but there isn't a Democrat, or person on the left, in this country who would object to a Neo-Nazi from another country, who staged protests on a college campus, from getting deported.

so let's not pretend the Democrats are doing this based on some political or ethical principle

In a democracy people should be able to express their beliefs without fear of reprisal.

I'm not in your country. But If I was I would strenuously object. The laws apply to everyone. Not just to people who have views with which we agree. Or even disagree. Your statement is nonsensical in any case. There would obviously be many on the left who would object to someone being deported simply because they were protesting. Whatever their views.

You're not even using a brush to paint people with what you think must be their views. You're using a paint bomb. Try cranking it back a little. If you'd have said that 'there are probably some on the left who would want a neo Nazi deported for their views', then I'd have agreed with you. Go Defcon 1 every time and it just looks like you're looking for an argument. Plus you'll be wrong most of the time.

What country are you in? I'm in the United States, registered to vote in 1972 as a Democrat and have never changed that designation.
My liberalism is much like that of Voltaire. And while I detest Nazis I hold that they also have a right to speak.

Do you? This is an outrageous post in my opinion.

Like, as in, deport them to a concentration camp and do tests on them? I'm not sure, I can't decide on yes or no..

...Leaning slightly more towards yes though, but still undecided.

Green card holders who are clearly rabble rousing insurrectionists themselves inciting mayhem should be deported. That should be a no brainer free of controversy.

Nor any plan to do so outside the realm of fear mongering conspiracy theory rumors.

That's not going to happen because DOGE would consider concentration camps too expensive to maintain.

I'm not sure if I should listen to the angel on my left shoulder wearing all black, or the one on my right, all in white. Any suggestions? I'm stumped here.

...They both seem so logical.

Actually it was Hillary Clinton that wanted to reprogram Trump supporters

Actually it was Hillary Clinton that wanted to reprogram Trump supporters
That's not what she said. She wasn't referring to all Trump supporters, only some of them ("those MAGA extremists [who] take their marching orders from Donald Trump," and she didn't say that she wanted to "reprogram" them, but suggested that "maybe...something needs to happen."

The exact quote:
“Sadly, so many of those extremists, those MAGA extremists, take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure. He’s only in it for himself. He’s now defending himself in civil actions and criminal actions. And when do they break with him? Because at some point maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members. But something needs to happen.”

Except she did not.

As anyone who reads what she said (or hears her say it herself) can plainly see.
