  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sociologist Margaret Poloma has defined slaying in the Spirit as "the power of the Holy Spirit so filling a person with a heightened inner awareness that the body's energy fades away and the person collapses to the floor".
Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John to the mountain of transfiguration in Matthew 17:

5b behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
People who believe in the slain in the spirit use this incident and others to support their claim. The term slain in the spirit is not in the Bible. I would not argue about it theologically.

As for the phenomenon itself, in some instances, it could be real. In others, it is not. In any case, it is not a required experience for those who love Jesus. I've never experienced it, even though I exposed myself in this kind of atmosphere on multiple occasions watching others "slain" in the Spirit. In fact, on one occasion, I was invited by the pastor onto the stage while he attempted to perform the operation on me. A couple of strong men stood behind me in case I fell backward. It did not work for me.

If you think you have been slain in the Spirit, you need to ask yourself: what fruit have you produced since then?
