  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A 25 doesn’t have enough experience to help a political party, ‘tis true, how does one obtain “experience”?
In four years he’ll have had 4 years of “experience”.
Exactly right! Experience comes with time.

Some children are gifted with musical talent and can play intricate, complicated compositions on their chosen instrument (many but not all will chose to pursue a life whereby their can utilize their talents to bring joy to themselves and others.

This is known thing, accepted and generally regarded as “normal”; why though, is it different if the gift or talent is geared toward the political?

Some people are just “natural politicians”.

Yeah, that’s fair. It makes me wonder how many people are ambitious about politics knowing they are going to be criticized and hated by many.

Political animals can thrive on being disliked, too, (in the “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”, way).

I frequently hear from both political parties that it is time to pass leadership to the younger generation because the older generation does not understand today's needs and is disconnected from the reality in which the younger generation lives. Honestly speaking, these claims are unfounded and lack merit.

If you are my age then, in our time, social media presence did not determine our social standing. We were not concerned with the number of friends on our social media accounts or the LIKES on our TikTok or Twitter feeds. However, that does not imply we were unaware of which students or friends were popular among our peers. Although we didn't constantly chat with hundreds of teenagers like kids do today, we understood the value of friendship or popularity and recognized that peer pressure, whether from electronic devices or in the schoolyard, could negatively impact our social standing.
I have no idea how old you actually are, but I would say at least 40 given your "8 years[or so] in middle management". My approximate age is given under my avatar.
When we grew up, children communicated on landlines and did not have to worry about an embarrassing moment in the school bathroom or cafeteria going viral within minutes. However, that does not mean we never experienced embarrassing moments in the classroom or had secrets shared with close friends become the main topic of conversation at school.
Didn't have a phone to chat with other kids.
When we attended university, tuition fees were not as high as they are today. However, that does not mean we are unfamiliar with the experience of graduating with significant debt that exceeds our salary's ability to repay it. Although we did not graduate with $400,000 in debt, we understand what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck and drive a 15-year-old car that frequently breaks down.
I've never had a "breaks down frequently" problem with any of my 10+ year old cars. It pays to start with quality. (Now my Dad, he had some problem cars, though none were as bad as the lawnmower that required about 1 hour of repairs for every 5 hours of mowing.
We might not work on our phone or laptop while on vacation or late at night from home to meet deadlines in this demanding economy, but we know we must work twice as hard to advance. Yet, we discovered a much junior colleague got promoted because he is friends with the boss’s son.

My point is this: while tools and technologies used by today's youth may be different, the fundamental issues in society have remained unchanged for generations. There have always been "Haves" and "Have-nots." Those who have wealth or resources have always had an easier life compared to those who do not, who often must work twice as hard. Life during my time was neither easier nor harder than that of current or previous generations.

The notion that a middle-aged person cannot relate to today's youth is inaccurate. While I may not use all social media platforms to communicate with them, it is not true that we do not understand their problems or know the solutions. In fact, our life experiences and successes give us the insight to guide the younger generation effectively.
where is this going?
If political parties are disconnected with youth, it may not be due to a lack of understanding of their needs, but rather because there has been a failure to listen to and engage honestly with them.
Oh, right that's what this thread is about.
Instead of bringing a 25-year-old to address the youth of this generation, those of us who are successful and experienced should be honest with the younger generation. We should share our experiences on how to progress and what solutions are feasible for the future. It is important to communicate that societal changes they desire, such as equality, inclusion, addressing racism, or combating climate change, occur gradually and not overnight.
I'm sure that will work well...

Okay, I'll buy that. Listening to young people, sounds like a good idea....

So tell them what their concerns are, and how they're not important enough to deal with right now. Got it.

Um, what happened to the listening to young people thing?

-- A2SG, young people are, of course, notoriously famous for wanting older people to share their experiences as they tell them to just keep on waiting, we'll address your concerns just after we give rich people some more tax cuts....

Who did you think David Hogg was going to rely on for the information he’s going to disseminate to the youth masses?

Maybe the 18-25 demographic would like to hear this wisdom from someone closer to their own age, instead of listening to some Boomer/older GenXer prattle on?

I'm curious, is your objection that we Democrats want to choose whoever we want, and if you're not a Democrat, stay out of it? If so, I understand, it's none of my business. Appoint 25 years old or even younger and let them win election.

Unfortunately, for individuals like myself who do not support either Republicans or Democrats, we must view current politics with disappointment.
