  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

2 Timothy 2:
14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
Was Paul against word study and lexical analysis?
No, Paul wrote earlier in 1 Timothy 6:
3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing.
Paul was against self-conceit and unhealthy controversy:
He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words,
What's wrong with quarrels about words?
which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5a and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth.
Watch out for these negative consequences when arguing about words.
Where do we draw the line between proper hermeneutics and foolish arguments?
Check the heart attitudes of the participants. Is there peace inside and outside? Peace is the line. When one crosses it, he is entering the territory of foolish arguments.
Paul’s warning against quarreling about words is not a prohibition against careful study or theological discussion. Rather, it is a call to approach such discussions with humility, love, and a focus on godliness. The line between proper hermeneutics and foolish arguments is drawn by the presence or absence of peace—both internally (in the heart) and externally (in relationships). When peace is lost, it’s a sign that the discussion has veered into unhealthy territory. As believers, we are called to pursue truth in a way that builds up the body of Christ and reflects the character of our Savior.
