  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Preach the gospel at all times. Use words if necessary" is often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, though there is no evidence he actually said it.

That saying should be counter-balanced by Romans 10:

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?"
The phrase "preach the Gospel; if necessary, use words" is a call to live out one's faith authentically and demonstrably, letting actions be the primary testament to the transformative power of the Gospel. Words should be used to supplement and explain this lived experience when appropriate. Don't preach the Gospel unless you are supporting it with your actions.

There was a special case in 1 Peter 3:

1 Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
Generally, words are necessary. Jesus demonstrated the Gospel through both words and deeds.

Very nice assessment Tony. The words of Francis of Assisi there are part of my signature on my email, along with Oswald Chambers words, "I have never met a person I could despair of, or lose all hope for, after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God."
