Border Patrol agent fatally shot in Vermont while stopping car with German national on alleged expired visa

Teresa Youngblut, 21, allegedly opened fire at Border Patrol officer David Maland when he stopped her and a friend, Felix Baukholt, on Monday on Interstate 91 in Coventry, according to the FBI.

They were initially pulled over because Baukholt, a German national, appeared to have an expired visa — before gunfire broke out, authorities said.

On Jan. 14, an employee of a hotel in Lyndonville, Vermont, noticed the two while they were checking in and reported to law enforcement that they were dressed in all-black tactical clothing and visibly armed, according to court documents. Investigators had tried to initiate a conversation with them, according to the complaint, but the pair declined to talk extensively and checked out shortly afterward, saying they were in the area to buy property.

After the shooting, authorities collected what appeared to be cellphones wrapped in aluminum foil from the car, according to the complaint. Authorities also allegedly recovered a ballistic helmet, a set of night-vision goggles, a tactical belt with holster, two full-face respirators, 48 rounds of .380-caliber jacketed hollow point ammunition, handheld two-way radios, shooting range targets, electronic storage devices, and what appeared to be a journal among Youngblut’s identification documents.

The incident marked the first time since 2010 that a Border Patrol agent was slain by an assailant, according to a memorial list of fallen officers compiled by support groups. Maland had served in the U.S. Air Force before joining law enforcement.

Lind survived the attack but lost an eye. On Jan. 17, Lind, now 82, was stabbed to death on the same property, weeks before he could testify in the case. On Monday, a prosecutor in Vermont alleged in a court filing that the weapons supplied to Youngblut and Baukholt came from a person connected to the Vallejo homicide investigation and another unspecified double homicide in Pennsylvania. Youngblut and Snyder also applied for a marriage license in Washington state in November, according to an Open Vallejo investigation.

Alleged leader of cultlike ‘Zizian’ group arrested in Maryland​

Jack LaSota, 34, was arrested on Sunday along with Michelle Zajko, 33, of Media, Pennsylvania. They face multiple charges including trespassing, obstructing and hindering and possession of a handgun in the vehicle, police said on Monday.

LaSota, who used she/her pronouns, and in her writings says she is a transgender woman, railed against perceived enemies, including so-called rationalist groups, which operate mostly online and seek to understand human cognition through reason and knowledge.
