  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump says he'll place tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China on Saturday

There wouldn't be any tribalism if the Democrats would just work with the President.

I see others have responded to this nonsense post already... but I'll re-emphasize. Sarcasm? Or just true ignorance?

"Just agree with everything we do, no matter how illegal, foolish, or based on false premise it is."

I disagree. The next PM will be far more cooperative than Justin Trudeau, he will actually work out deals with Trump that will benefit both countries.

I thought Trump did that in his first term, with the USMCA? Why should we expect, if Trump couldn't get it right the first time when he claimed he made a such a great (didn't he say "perfect") agreement, why would Trump suddenly do better this time?

I know, right? The Mode T was perfect, no need to improve.

Ford manufactured the Model T for 19 years. The USMCA lasted about 4.5 years, and the agreement it replaced lasted over 25 years. And I might be wrong, but at the time Trump signed it I seem to recall him saying it was "perfect" -- odd that a perfect agreement would need to be replaced in less than 5 years, particularly when the agreement it replaced lasted over 5 times longer (and the Model T was made for 4 times longer).

Things change. In the late 1970s we were building four destroyers for Iran. In 1979 something happened and we kept the ships.

2020 is not 2025. Canada didn't open the fentanyl floodgates until after the agreement was made.

What fentanyl floodgates are those? And that is ignoring that fentanyl from Mexico and Canada was an issue in 2020 (just one Trump didn't focus on, until he decided he wanted tariffs against Mexico and Canada).

(Insert Trump vocalization) It was the perfect agreement. The best, some say, ever. But Mexico and Canada couldn't honor it and kept trying to pull a fast one one the United States. So it would have been the perfect agreement if Governor Trudeau and that woman from Mexico did what they were supposed to do.

What is your plan to end the tribalism?

Who said that I thought I could end it?

My thoughts are: An appeal to reason, and to finding common ground. I don't have much confidence that our current politicians can or will do this (or that it would work to quell the tribalism that exists right now in the general populace) - but it sure would be nice to see someone try.

Wishful thinking perhaps, but we might just find out that the majority of Americans don't buy into the extremism which is being sold by the far left and the far right.

That still doesn't change what he said. Lol. I believe Trump said something along the lines of: "I don't know who made these trade deals, but they are terrible."

Well, Mr. President... the person who made the trade deal of which you speak is you. And when you made it, you said it was "perfect".

Again - you feel you must endlessly defend anyone who is in your tribe. The man made an idiotic comment, why not admit that?

Just like it was comical and a head shaking moment when Biden referred to Kamala Harris as "Vice President Trump".

And regarding the fentanyl "floodgates" comment: Do you have a source for that?

I think that is one of the reasons for the Canada tariffs.

Floodgates? It's a leaky tap. The amount of fentanyl coming over the border would fit in a backpack.
