  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been going through the worst gout attack not only of my life, but that my doctor has ever seen in her career.

I know, of course, how demanding of one's attention pain can be. Our first impulse is often "What can I do to ease this - this dis-ease that has somehow come upon me?" In my own case, when I wake up a bit more, I can realize that God has permitted this to come upon me and His Word reminds me that He works all to the good, for the good, for His good intentions foundational in this creation. I wonder, that is, about the "theological" dimension of the pains and sufferings that have come upon me. In my personal and individual life, His cosmic universal will is personal: I need personally, and eventually I come to realize personally, that this pain and/or suffering has been permitted me for my good in His always Good and perfect will.

"Offer it up" used to be a very common response to pain and suffering, when the Mass was explicitly described as a re-presentation of the perfect worship, the perfect Sacrifice, the perfect Communion of Christ with His Faithful Church. Even now, the Faithful know the Truth of that Reality even in the common absence of substantive catechesis and the impoverished witness of it in the actual N.O. liturgy. Christ still seeks followers who will "take up your cross and follow Me," not to "drop by and say 'Hi' to Jesus", not to "fall in love with Jesus", but to enter Divine and Holy Trinitarian Charity - Agape Love - and suffer with for and in Him, for the poor sinners of this lost world.

Col 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church,
Col 1:25 of which I became a minister according to the divine office which was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known,
Col 1:26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints.
Col 1:27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Col 1:28 Him we proclaim, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man mature in Christ.

I have gout, but haven't had a flare up since my cancer surgery back in 2013.

I take allopurinol daily to be sure it never comes back.

Also, I lost about 40lbs since and I seem OK health wise.

I'm on the mend now.
there is a diet that can help manage gout by reducing uric acid levels in the blood. Here are some general guidelines:

Foods to Avoid

  • Organ Meats: Liver, kidneys, and sweetbreads.
  • Red Meat: Beef, lamb, and pork.
  • Seafood: Anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, trout, and tuna.
  • Sugary Foods and Beverages: Sweetened cereals, bakery goods, candies, and drinks with high-fructose corn syrup.
  • Alcohol: Beer and distilled liquors, especially during gout attacks.

Foods to Include

  • Complex Carbohydrates: Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Low-Fat Dairy: Milk, yogurt, and cheese.
  • Lean Proteins: Poultry, tofu, and legumes.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush uric acid from your body.

Food being the cause of gout is a myth according to my doctor. Uric acid is the cause and the body
creating too much uric acid is the cause. The source for this is often related to obesity. Losing weight
and eating moderately is the best way to avoid gout flareups.

It came from the days that only wealthy people could afford a doctor for their gout flareups, and it was thought
that their diet of red meat and seafoods were the cause.

The key is to take your medication, especially allopurinol. This will not cure a flareup but prevent it.

I eat what I want these days and haven't had a flareup in 12 years and the last flareup was because of the
surgery I had.

You are contradicting yourself. I have neuropathy caused by hyperglycemia that can be best controlled through diet and exercise. I get results very fast when I control my diet. You doctor says food is not the cause and then they tell you to control your diet.

The Ornish Diet, being a low-fat, plant-based eating plan, can potentially help with managing gout. Since the diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes while avoiding high-fat and high-purine foods like red meat and seafood, it aligns well with dietary recommendations for gout management.

The Ornish Diet, developed by Dr. Dean Ornish, is a low-fat, plant-based eating plan designed to improve heart health and reverse chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Ornish has put a huge amount of research into how diet or eating right heals many different conditions.

The doctor told me to lose weight, not stop eating certain foods.

Sorry if this confused you.

The Ornish Diet is not for everyone, and you need fat for energy. I tried it decades ago, and it turned out not to be as good as it proclaimed. High in carbs low in fat is a no-no for most people, especially insulin resistant types and those who are diabetic.

The Atkins diet worked better, but then the best diet is to eat moderately and do not eat lots of bad carbs found in many process foods.

The Ornish Diet is not for everyone,
The diet is developed for people with clogged arteries. They just find that the diet works and improves people with a lot of different conditions. Ornish has done a LOT of research, so his diet has been well proven.

Yeah, except the diet causes you to be hungry because of the lack of fat. Also, those whom his diet helped
had more to do with teaching them to remove stress from their lives. Also, not all of his patients stuck with
it. Some went ahead and had heart surgery.

FYI, I had open heart surgery due to a blood infection. Before the surgery, they did at CAT scan to
see if I had any blockages. I had none. I attribute it to drinking red wine with my meals, as my
doctor had told me. This besides the fact that I ate at a diner every morning during my employment,
having eggs and cream.

The research shows that diets low in fat and protein do more harm than good and people don't stick with
those diets.

Heck, all you have to do is watch how people survive in the wilderness. They need fat and protein. A

I do not eat dead animals so I struggle to get enough protein. Although the basic diet of rice and beans will keep people alive. Also, they can survive on around a dollar a day.

I had an ablation in my heart for ventricular tachycardia. They come up with new cures all the time for what ails us. When the heart gets above 150 they want to shock you to bring it down. If I get my doctor to do it, he will send me home that day. Now I am more dependent on the pacemaker.

Gee, I pray that you're OK.

I'm doing fine, except that I know the pig valve I have in my heart will eventually have to be replaced,
or it's just stop working and I'll be sent to meet Jesus. :D

When I went through some classes they showed us the different valves they use. Hopefully, when it is time to replace it they will come up with something better that is an improvement.

My cardiologist said that if it has to be replaced, they'll usually do it with a mechanical valve instead of the biological valve. Apparently
they can only do the biological valve once.

Maybe there is less of a chance of the body wanting to reject a mechanical valve. They say organ transplants are not effective for long because the body wants to reject them.

Researchers at institutions like Imperial College London and Georgia Tech are working on developing bioresorbable heart valves. These valves are made from materials that the body can absorb over time, allowing new tissue to grow and replace the valve naturally

Sounds far-fetched but they seem to think it could be possible.

I was told by the surgeon that the biological vale and mechanical valve have the same lifespan, 15-20 years.

She preferred to use the biological valve, which I'm grateful for. Some people hear the mechanical valve
clicking at night when they're trying to sleep. Anyway, if it last 15-20 years, I'll probably have reached my
time on earth. :D

That is a lot of years that we would not have if the doctors had not given it to us. My problem is that it is still not easy to live right before God and that is still a struggle. They talk about Hezekiah and the 15 years he was given. Some people say he did not make the best use he could have with the years he was given.

Often what we see as failures in ourselves, God does not see.

God gives us the desire to love as He loves. Whatever we
do, must be done out of love.

Sure, we get impatient and say things we shouldn't have.
But that's not as important as uniting yourself with Christ.

I've been trying to live according to St Theresa's "Little Way."
That is, I try to offer up every hardship or small difficulty to
God. I forget to do it most of the time, but I'm trying. :D
