  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus made the good confession in his testimony to Pilate (1T 6:13). Pilated believed that Jesus was innocent. He wanted to released Jesus (Lk 23:16).

John 19:

11Jesus answered [Pilate], “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”
While Pilate bore some responsibility, others, Judas Iscariot and the religious leaders, were more culpable.

His wife believed Jesus was innocent. Matthew 27:

19 While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: 'Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.'
The Gospels portrayed Pilate as conflicted and reluctant, even symbolically washing his hands to distance himself from the crucifixion decision (Matthew 27:24). However, he still allowed Jesus to be executed to appease the crowd and maintain political stability.

The Coptic Church actually venerates Pilate as a saint. Ethiopian Orthodox Church considers Pilate and his wife saints.

The name "Pontius Pilate" appears in both the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds.

There is some good evidence that Pilate was saved.

There were two ways to be "saved". If one was of Israel and kept the law they could expect to be resurrected unto eternal life. When Jesus came trusting that he was the promised Messiah was a requirement.

Joh_8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

Since Paul (the apostle to the gentiles) had not been sent, Pilate would not have had the opportunity then to trust in the death, burial, and resurrection for sin that was in Paul's gospel 1Cor 15:1-4)

Since Pilate was not of Israel he could not be saved by the gospel for the circumcision. He might have been saved like Cornelius under the kingdom gospel after the resurrection, but there is no record of his having received the Holy Spirit. If he lived long enough, he might have been saved by Paul's gospel to the uncircumcison. However, there is no record of this.
