  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Democratic Party and the Department of Education and DOGE

Because the history of the Federal Department of Education has demonstrated that it has been failing to improve the learning, education, and reading levels of the vast majority of our students.
So let's examine what the failings actually are and how people think they can be corrected. Unless this is just a thread for saying 'DoED bad, must...kill...DoED' (with thanks to Oompa for the correct abbreviation).

When asked by host Mike Slater how Congress can cut spending in reconciliation, Hageman, who defeated former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), said there is a “whole variety of ways.”

“And one of it is to cut entire programs, as well as just simply reduce what we are outlaying for these various agencies,” she explained.

“I mean, we have got to be looking [at] the way that we’re doing this is through the specific committees. So we need to look at, what is it that… the Education Committee to the cut. Well, I would cut out the federal Department of Education,” she said. “That can save us hundreds of billions.”

The congresswoman emphasized that she would “abolish the Federal Department of Education” altogether.

“Education is a state issue. We should not have a federal Department of Education. We can do block grants to the states, which is what we did prior to 1980, when the Department of Education came into existence. But the federal Department of Education, since it came into existence in 1980, our test scores have continuously slid,” she said.

“When you come from some of the inner city schools, it is just absolutely an abomination. We have entire classes that can’t read and do math,” the lawmaker continued. “The Federal Department of Education has failed. Now, keep in mind, I come from a long line of teachers. I’m not saying we abolish education. I’m saying we abolish the federal Department of Education.”
She added that she is a “product of before the federal Department of Education,” as she graduated from high school in 1981.
“Our education was controlled by the state and local school board, and I can tell you, they do a phenomenal job. In the state of Wyoming, we have a wonderful Superintendent of Public Instruction. We have people who are dedicated to providing a good quality education to our students in Wyoming,” she said. “The federal Department of Education gets in the way.”

what do y'all believe ought to be done with the federal Department of Education?
Put the Bible back into the school system. Get rid of the liberal opinion of what the separation of church and state really means.

I think they should be required to study Hebrew and kick hooked on phonics out the door. People should learn how to translate the Bible for themselves and not depend on others to do that for them.

Make schools private and not public so they do not force feed government propaganda to the students. The best thing my parents ever did was to take me out of the public schools and put me into private schools.

That actually works. That's what Muslims do with the Quran.

Maybe you can investigate this and tell me how anything that is not connected with what we measure as it relates to educational standards affects said standards.
The best thing my parents ever did was to take me out of the public schools and put me into private schools.
My two went private. It cost a fortune. Well, a small fortune anyway. And there was a fair amount that the schools taught that had nothing at all to do with the three R's *. Propaganda? Well, I think that's stretching the term somewhat. But it didn't affect their general educational schooling in any way so I had no problem with it. In fact, it taught them about things that they wouldn't have learned at home.

Both went to Catholic schools, but I don't necessarily class as propaganda that which I don't believe and which I think is unnecessary. As long as the usual scholastic subjects are well covered (and they were) then I'm cool. If they asked any questions to me about it then I'd give them my opinion. And whaddya know, now they'd have two opinions and they could make up their own minds.

Mine were taught about a few of the main religious texts. They did comparative religion. I recommend it.

It means that Muslim and Jewish and Hindu students aren't taught that what they might believe is a lie. Parents can instill whatever belief system into their children as they see fit. As can their church (or synagogue etc). Not the school.

You mean two people do not have three opinions?
Sorry, I can't parse that. Each of my children had two opinions in regard to religion (specifically Catholicism). One from their school and one from me.

Catholic school would be wonderful if they would teach the catechism and get people to follow that teaching. But some people believe they fail to accomplish that. Popes have emphasized the importance of following the Catechism of the Catholic Church. For instance, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI both underscored the significance of adhering to the Catechism as a comprehensive guide to Catholic faith and morals.
