  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Theologetic Table of the Evidence Theology + Apologetics

The Table is made up of Basic Elements: the most elemental evidence and explanations for God, Jesus, The Bible and Christianity as well as Root Elements: a foundation that the basic elements are built upon.

Table 46

There are 4 main principles of hermeneutics:

1. Scripture Interprets Scripture - Scripture will often interpret itself. As an example, sometimes a Biblical writer will interpret a previous Biblical passage.

2. Context Interprets Scripture - Any verse should be read in the context of it’s surrounding verses, chapter and book. The historical, cultural and linguistic (literary style, original language, etc.) context of a verse are also important.*

3. Intent Interprets Scripture - All Scripture has an original intended meaning. As such, all Scripture has one correct interpretation as well as other possible applications.

4. The Clear Interprets The Obscure - Scripture will not contradict itself. When an obscure verse is interpreted, a clear verse can help with it’s interpretation

What does everyone think of this? Is four principles enough, or are these missing something important?

I would rather here witness about how God has changed their life.
You are in the Hermeneutics area of Christian Forums. Testifying to God changing lives is always good, but it is not the subject in this section.

It sounds good, but these principles are used by a lot of groups, and it does not lead to a consensus or a consistent way of studying all passages.

I don't know of anything that does that. Understanding the different styles of the groups of books in the Bible helps, we do not read poems like the Psalms, the same way as Letters, like the Epistles. As for a consensus, The Nicene Creed is your best bet, we have had agreement about that for 1700 years. World Council of Churches Nicea 2025.

The church remains divided amidst positive thinking.

Do you know theologetics?
Okay, I looked up First Order Logic, Oxford University lecture on it in pdf form, plus a geeks for geeks article on it.

Theologetics is just:

Theology + Apologetics

Theology – the·ol·o·gy
The study of the (Christian) religious faith, practice, and experience: the study of God and God’s relation to the world.

Apologetics – a·pol·o·get·ics
A branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity.
“. . . but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence,” (1 Peter 3:15)

The concept is explained as "What if Christianity could be broken down to an exact science and perfectly illustrated like a mathematical equation? Well, it can’t… So we came up with Theologetics to make difficult Biblical and theological concepts easier to understand and organized different apologetic arguments regarding tough questions of today." (Bold mine.)

So I think the conclusion should be no, theologetics is not as logically pure as First Order Logic.
