  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of the Americans still living today (I assume "still living" is a requirement), Allison has arguably made more significant contributions to cancer research and treatment than any other American alive today.

The products of his research (immunotherapy drugs like Yervoy and Opdivo) have taken cancers that used to be a six-month death sentence, and made it so people can have another 5-10 quality years (and in some cases, go into remission)

Great work.

But Im not seeing anything there indicative of exceptional character - which i think is what the OP is going for by looking for a "good person". I mean clearly he's worked hard in his chosen profession, which is laudable. But lots of people work hard.

There's some additional information on him in here.

I would say a person who (as a result of watching multiple members of his family dying when he was young) making it his mission to make sure other families don't have to experience that would indicate pretty good character. And the fact that he continued to do on-the-ground clinical research long after he could've retired or taken a regular desk job would indicate his passion for wanting to save lives.

Sounds like a very good person to me. We're lucky to have had him on our side.

So far Im going to have to go with Mr Bzeek though, who has been doing something really really difficult to ease the suffering of others. More difficult than excelling at a profession - even in such a dedicated way.

If I can think of someone to top Mr Bzeek, I will nominate them here.
