  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mt 13:

55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?
Matthew identified James as one of Jesus' brothers.

John 7:

5b Even his own brothers did not believe in him.
James didn't believe until after Jesus' death (30 CE).

Jesus appeared to James (1C 15:7).

37 CE, Paul went to Jerusalem, Ga 1:

18b to confer with Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I [Paul] saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.
42 CE, Peter was miraculously freed from prison. Ac 12:

17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. 'Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,' he said, and then he left for another place.
He instructed the believers to inform James about his release, indicating James' leadership role.

48 CE, James spoke in the Jerusalem Council. Ac 15:

19 "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not cause trouble for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood."
James wrote his epistle.

62 CE, James was martyred.

They called him James the Righteous or James the Just due to his reputation for strict adherence to the Law and his ascetic lifestyle.

What about James, the brother of John? How do we know which James is being refenced?

Right, it is a bit confusing at times. Do you have a verse in mind?
These are the various James I find on a quick Bible search
  • James, the brother of John, son of Zebedee
  • James son of Alphaeus, disciple of Christ
  • James, brother of Christ, son of Mary, brothers also with Joseph, Simon, Judas (Matthew 13:55)
  • James, the author of the book James (may be same as one of the James' above?)
  • --- Below are more confusing to me ----

  • "Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[a] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons." (Matthew 27:55-57). -- This James is likely Jesus's brother James. It just seems strange that Mary is specified as relative to James and Joseph, rather than as related to Jesus.

  • "Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome." (Mark 15:40) -- This James is also likely Jesus's brother, but here he is called "James the Younger".

  • "When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James." (Acts 1:13) -- This text lists 3 people with name of "James". The last James is listed as a parent of Judas.

  • "Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:" (Jude 1:1) -- Jude describes himself as brother of James. If this James is the brother of Jesus, is 'Jude' a shortened version of 'Judas' (brother of Jesus)?? If Jude was brother of Jesus, why would he reference himself to James and not Jesus??

See Mary the mother of James and Joseph

See Who were the three Jameses in Ac 1:13

See Jude, a brother of James

Good questions :)
