  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

CV NEWS FEED // A growing number of high school students are choosing to become Catholic, and Catholic Central High School in Detroit is leading the way with a unique sacramental preparation program that is attracting national attention.

Since the inception of the Order of Christian Initiation of Teens (OCIT) in 2018, approximately 50 students at Catholic Central have been initiated into the Catholic Church, and another 18 are set to complete their sacraments spring of 2025, Detroit Catholic reported.

The success of the program, which provides a pathway for non-Catholic students to learn about and join the Catholic faith, has caught the attention of education leaders, including the National Catholic Educational Association. School administrators and theology teachers are looking to share their success at the association’s annual spring conference.

It's kind of ironic, the Church has underestimated how attractive good catechesis can be to people. Once they're in the door, when you lay out for them just the truth of the faith and instruct people well in it, they become deeply interested. That's what I've observed. So I'm not surprised such a good program is seeing a high success rate, it just kind of follows logically.

Conversely that's probably why so many poorly catechized Catholics today have such a laissez-faire attitude about being real Catholics, because their catechists were laissez-faire about teaching the faith correctly. Attitude reflects leadership.

Yes many are left to figure it out on their own. Which is a shame. Some continue to learn, others don’t. The real tragedy is the false witness a lot of poorly catechized Catholics give. Misunderstandings propagate quickly.

Some continue to learn,
I really respect the folks who do that. Kind of Will Hunting style.

Ain't that the truth? That makes my skin crawl. That classic "I went through 12 years of Catholic School" as a prologue to whatever diatribe they're going to unload against the faith, as if it qualifies them to say anything.

This is why I wish A) The Vatican was more aggressive with excommunication and even the threat of it, and B) Our bishops had spines.

If there was more conversation in the air supply that "if you say you're Catholic but you do/say/believe XYZ then you're outside the Church." Then maybe the innocent bystanders wouldn't get caught up in the destructive wake as often.

True. I have seen many in this forum and those that come to this forum speak of being raised Catholic or becoming Catholic only to leave it propagate falsehoods concerning the faith. It’s incredibly frustrating. If you confront them with the truth of the matter it means absolutely nothing. They cling to the falsehoods because the want to believe the falsehoods. There are some that simply do not want to know the Truth it seems. Yeah there is a lot that goes on within the Church that’s disappointing but it still does not affect the faith. The Church does need to step up and stop obfuscating all the time. You can’t please all the people all the time.

Spines. That’s the critical element. That and a healthy imagination to see what God wills.

I just watched a recent video by Dr Jordon Peterson where he talked about how young people, especially young males
are hungry for structure in their lives. It's probably a good reason why the lure towards Catholicism is growing among the
young now. They've found something which provides them with structure and principles to live by. I hope it keeps going and
many find faith in their hearts and not just another tribe to belong to.

And possibly any measure of supernatural faith, depending on the bishop.
